Art Stolen from Paris' Museum of Modern Art Includes Picasso and Matisse and Totals Hundreds of Millions of Dollars

In an art theft heist that has museum officials and police baffled, it appears that just one thief broke in to the Paris Museum of Modern Art sometime overnight on Wednesday and stole five paintings, two of which were by Picasso and Matisse.

Just one masked man was captured on the security cameras outside the museum and entered through a broken window. The security system was also disabled, and while just one man was seen on camera police are trying to determine if the man was acting alone or with others. Three guards were also on duty that night and said they did not see anything.

It is thought that the man entered by breaking a security lock on an outside gate and then breaking a window. The area around the museum, just across the Seine River from the Eiffel Tower has now been closed off while police investigate.

"It's an enormous crime, one of the biggest in art history," said a source close to the enquiry, who estimated that the stolen paintings were worth €500 million (£430 million).
