Colleges in the US are starting to move their business on-line. However, students must be leary of colleges that seem to move heaven and earth to get an enrollment without gaining transcripts and other pertinent enrollment ID information.

Recently, a student named Jess Etheridge contacted the police department in San Diego, CA to complain that he felt the Ashford University online school was misrepresenting itself to him in regards to location, name, federal code, etc. and pushed for him to allow them to get him in school with Stafford loans.

Stafford loans are basically loans that the student takes out but must pay back within a certain time period after they graduate from college. The interest rate is inflated and the graduating student is presented with hundreds of thousands of dollars in financial debt.

The FAFSA application on-line did not recognize Ashford University from Clinton, Iowa operating out of San Diego, California's Registrar address until 1:00 pm Eastern April 25, 2010. It shows Ashland University to have a federal code of 001881 for student aid applications.

The US News & World Report has no articles on Ashford University except one entry which claims Ashford is one of the nations 2010's Best Colleges. The list for 2010 hasn't even been computated yet. It appears money will buy anything. Including, a feature entry in the US News World Report page.

One of Ashford's new students, Jess Etheridge, believes that a handful of employees are gaining money in the names of students for Stafford loans and setting them up on line with one course to start. "Then, they offered the books to me for free," he said.

It appears that once the student begins their coursework, the information is erased out of the system and they are left with a federal loan they cannot pay and they are no closer to a college degree. This high tech scam is the first of its kind, according to investigators.

The address for the San Diego Ashford University registrar's office is 13500 Evening Creek Dr., San Diego, CA 92128, reported ;to the student by enrollment advisors but Bridgepoint Education Corporation which Ashford affiliates themselves with is located at 13480 Evening Creek Drive North San Diego, CA 92138.

The police dispatcher in San Diego said on Sunday, April 25, 2010 "that street doesn't exist in her computer files."

If you or anyone that you know have information regarding Clinton, Iowa's Ashford University on-line, please call San Diego detectives at 619-531-2000.

Etheridge believes that the advisors are part of a unique scam to gain personal information, social security numbers and background information on students to replace their identity and rack up hundreds of thousands of dollars of debt.

The company has gone so far as to use another school graduating on-line to represent Ashford by digitally imposing the Ashford banner over the another schools identifying information. They have created a 49-page graduation booklet to make it seem legitimate.

"What school creates a book on the graduation ceremony for throwaway and to guide the guests at the graduationn that you have to print out yourself?" said Etheridge.

Investigations into newer type of identity and banking frauds will most certainly cause millions of on-line degrees to be monitored more closely and will also, stop unaccredited universities and colleges from scamming hopeful international students.

After investigation of Ashford and Bridgepoint Education, the company claiming affiliation with Ashford University, evidence shows that Bridgepoint is an affiliate of Universal in California which is not an education company, it is a music and movie corporation. It also, owns theme parks across the US. Yet, Bridgepoint has an SEC filing which puts it on the NASDAQ stock exchange.

The Iowa Attorney General has confirmed that there has been numerous complaints from students regarding the legitimacy of Ashford University. If you have any complaints and know of any financial crimes committed by this University please contact Steve Switzer, Investigating Officer of the Attorney General, Consumer Protection Division 1305 E. Walnut Street, Des Moines IA 50319, telephone number 515-281-5926  or 1-888-777-4590 Fax: 515-281-6771

In 2004, a Texas college, Trinity Southern University was accused of fraud. The article is highlighted below:

The Scam According to investigators, beginning in January 2004, the defendants transmitted more than 18,000 illegal e-mail messages to promote the sale of online academic degrees from Trinity Southern University. The website link that was included in the e-mails claimed that for a fee between $299 and $499 consumers can purchase a Bachelors, Masters, Executive Masters or Ph.D. degree in several fields including English, Business Administration and Biology. The complaint accuses the defendants of fraudulently claiming that Trinity Southern University: • Is a legitimate institution that can issue academic undergraduate, graduate and doctoral degrees in several majors. • Offers legitimate transcripts including a list of classes, grades and a final grade point average or GPA. • Is accredited by Recoleta University in Argentina when no such university exists. • Is privately accredited by NAPLAC.org when there is no organization by that name. In addition the address of the accreditation letter belongs to defendant Alton Scott Poe. • Will verify information provided by consumers to be used in the evaluation process to grant degrees or to recommend that consumers are eligible for more advanced degrees. • Will prosecute or revoke the degrees of those who withhold information or provide false information for admission and enrollment. Pappert said undercover agents contacted the defendants online

This hoax of an article is so ignorant. Your grammar is poor at best. Your spacing is akin to a five year old. Half of your information is unsubstantiated and unreferenced. The phone number you listed for San Diego "detectives" is the main phone number for the non-emergency operator, which is strange because detectives would have their own extensions and names. I mean seriously, you take the time to write this road trash out and you don't even realize that Ashord Universities ground campus is in Clinton, Iowa and that the corporate office is in San Diego, CA. In your text you made a couple more errors of worthy mention, throw away is two words and graduation only has one "n". Wow...you are quite the detective/journalist/super hero now aren't ya? I am a student at Ashford and I use financial aid and have even driven by the Ashford offices on numerous occassions. I love the service they provide for veterans like myself and have never had an issue. Perhaps if you took some classes there you could write an article that would be better than this used toilet paper that you have posted.

How much money have you earned off of the Ashford business.  I don't believe a word you say and I know how you found this article because it was sent on purpose to get you to comment....

It seems more strange that you have to respond and defend your article. Makes your "News" reporting site look a bit suspicious. Personally I could care less if Ashford is under investigation. However, fraud is not what they should be under investigation for. If anything it was a mistake, they hire humans and people make mistakes. As a matter of fact I know of several they have made out of sheer stupidity on financial aids part. The campus is small and before Bridgepoint bought it it was run by nuns. They have recently incorporated University of the Rockies I believe also. It is mainly an internet college. Reporting they don't have the street in their records is just to make the article look better and attacking the person who states it does is juvenile. I'm all for urging people to come forward if they have been cheated but the reporting should be a bit less biased.

This was given to me by a friend and neighbor who is enrolled and doing great at Ashford. Funny thing is I live in Sabre Springs and drive by this facility every day to go to work. There are 2 very large (and very nice I might add) corporate buildings they occupy on Evening Creek Road (which does exist as I own a condo on it). To make it real simple for our expose author: one building is one number and the other building is the other street number. Bridgepoint education is the parent company that purchased Ashford University and owns several other ones. That is the relationship between Bridgepoint and Ashford University, even my student friend knows this as she was told it by the website and staff.I looked at their homepage at www.ashford.edu and the site looks fully legit. As I am a student at another local school I checked for accreditation and they are good to go. I also looked up thier school code in my FAFSA and it was available. And just you know, the dreaded "Stafford Loan" this author eludes to as being so aweful is actually a government backed loan EVERYONE uses to go to LEGITIMATE schools. The interest rate is the same no matter what school in the country you go to. I don't mean to rant but GOD I hate people making up gargbage!

Mister.... the fact that you have to legitimize the buildings and locations of the San Diego sattelite Registrar proves to me that your scared about this article and you well should be.  So many complaints about the college that the Secretary of State has had to investigate the complaints?

Besides, the college does not even make the thousands of colleges on tbe Best Colleges list.  Let's face it, the school code was NOW available based on this article because Susan and George stalk everyone on line and especially a friend of mine that they have ripped off.  They knew about this article and it freaked them out...

Try finding a whole lot of info on the respected NEW sites which identify Ashford as a "accredidated" University.

There are only" 650 " students on campus.  You call that a college? I call it a summer camp!

Robert Spleady

Here are a few for you and your fellow readers:www.ashford.edu/info/accreditations_and_associations.phpwww.ashford.edu/info/en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ashwood_University    You may be confusing ASHFORD with ASHWORTHwww.bridgepointeducation.com/home/Now who is "Susan" and "George"? Are they perhaps the people in your head that tell you to do "things"? Things like rambling about conspiracies about stealing IDs, location issues, and mixing up college names. Remove the tin foil hat you are wearing...its not blocking the thought ways that are screwing you up. If the sites I've provided above (all of which I am sure you say are "made up") don't convince you that you are either confused or operating with one egg roll short of a pu-pu platter, then I give up. I am not affiliated with Ashford; I am in a clinical Psychology program at SDSU and from the rambling writing style, "victim" perspective and refusal to believe FACTS...sounds like you may be what we call a "wack job"(FYI nice avatar..too bad it isn't you).

Hello Uncensored,650 students on campus is a tight-knit learning community. You should probably look into the designations for what constitutes "university", "college", and "summer camp" before posting. Your article and comments are seriously flawed and misleading.I am an educator, I teach adjunct at a few Colleges and Universities both brick & mortar and online. I am actually using this post as an example in a course I am facilitating. It is a fine post to use in determining credibility of a website. While this site has a fine goal, the lack of journalistic integrity in this article draws suspicion. Please research, edit and post quality information if you feel this site is worth supporting. Opinion pieces like this with very little research will turn a quality site like www.nowpublic.com into nothing more than an online National Enquirer. The school code you mentioned in the lead article you identify for Ashland... not Ashford, quality reporting?Look at Bridgepoint education <www.bridgepointeducation.com/home/>, the parent company for University of the Rockies and Ashford University. Ashford itself is a university comprised of four colleges. The main campus in Clinton, Iowa, offers traditional students the same courses offered in the ASPIRE and online courses geared toward non-traditional students. Complaints by online students about their loans may stem mainly from the fact that many consumers do not seek out information on their loans and then are upset when they find that their opportunity to learn actually had a price tag. Having absolutely zero to do with the quality of education provided.I look forward to reading better articles on this site in the future.

Are you really that much of a clown? I mean, really? Ashford University has been around since 1918. The university was originally named Mt St. Claire College was founded in 1818 by the Sisters of St. Francis, Clinton, Iowa as a junior college for women. In 1950 the college was accredited by the north Central Association of Colleges and Schools and has since maintained its accreditation. In 1967 the college went co-ed. and BA programs began in 1979 and graduate programs (you cannot get those if you are not a real accredited university) in 2003. with the name change to the Franciscan University. In 2005, the university was acquired by Bridgepoint Education. Okay, so now they are sponsoring the Holiday Bowl, are on the NASDAC, and the founders got a couple of their degrees from one of those other schools that you find on every other billboard. Please look up the North Central Association and the Higher Learning Commission. You may want to take off the clown nose to read it. I'll bet you work for one of those "schools" that charged ridiculous prices for their education.

Accreditation? How 'bout this one honey? Updated and straight from the higher learning commissions web site. By the way, it took me less than 5 minutes to find that online. Some investigative person you are. www.ncahlc.org/component/option,com_directory/Action,ShowBasic/Itemid,184/instid,1249/lang,en/ Your article made the federal student loan people suddenly add a school. What a special kid. If you had that power you wouldn't be using a public blog board and misspelling yourself into the halls of fame. You make lots of claims about things but cite no references and show no proof regarding your accusations. I don't know how many students go to the university but I do know that any one of them is probably more credible than you.

UNCENSORED NEWS

How about this honey... Higher Learning Commission??  What a joke.  That's the next article

9
Doesn't Matter

Have you done any homework?  You are losing more and more credibility with every post.  How can you even question the credibility of the Higher Learning Commission?  Do you realize that the several of the college advertisement banners, at the top of your blog/news article, are accredited by the Higher Learning Commission?  It probably doesn't matter to you though since you probably get paid 5 cents for every click of the link, right?  Well, here's five cents (Clicked)...you'll need it while being unemployed looking for a job as a real journalist.

The writer of this blog is clearly uneducated and has no concept of proper grammer. The writer is a raving lunatic. Ashford University is regionally accredited just like all of the ivy league and state schools. One can go to collegesource.org and look up any university in the U.S. to find out information about a school's accreditation  (as well as which regional accreditation the school carries), the length of time the school has been accredited, and other pertinent information. You would think the author of this blog would know to do this! Some investigator. The author sounds like a moron. The total tuition for a Bachelor's degree from Ashford University is $44,000. It does not cost hundreds of thousands of dollars as the article claims. There are many non-profit private universities that cost $30,000 a year, such as Pepperdine, University of Redlands, and Biola. A student graduating from one of those universities can graduate with debts upwards of $100,000. The ignorance of this blogger is evidenced by his or her lack of eduction and lack of knowledge.

10
nunya

They do take out the private loans to cover what financial aid doesn't cover, but the access is sent back to you. The access averages about 10,000 a year. The student is responsible for sending that money back to the lender or spend it on other expenses. If for some strange reason you get your associates degree then your bachelors degree, and don't send in your loan money, it could cost you quite a bit. However the author is trying to make the school look bad so she won't state all the details. She only takes what would look bad for he school and goes with that, or she barely did any research for the article. This belongs in  blog not in a news style article. She had a friend who had  a bad experience and wrote this. Parts of which are borderline if not outright liable. I am sure it will be removed from this site soon enough.

11
Robert Spleady

That's it...a "whack job" taking on the Higher Learning Commission? An accreditation body that has evaluated EVERY COLLEGE in this country and is accepted as the authority to determine transferability of credits and curriculum content. A body that the US Government defers to in order to give a college Federal Title IV funding. That is akin to the next big story exposing the "myth" of the Supreme Court as a non-existent joke. Man I am having fun on this short bus...fake hot avatar and BS credentials aside; I AM REVOKING YOUR GOLD MEDAL. Return to your job wearing headgear and drooling on yourself!

Assuming the information she provided about herself isn't as manipulated as the information she gives in this article is, she is just someone who has to much money and free time. She has found a way to make herself feel important and fill her idle time. If she was looking for a real story I could give her one. All she has to do is admit this is a sad attempt at a smear campaign.

not a believer

I thought this whole website was about fake news, is this article supposed to be serious? I googled the address and it comes up on the map, I guess Ashford, or Ashworth (not sure because you mentioned two separate schools in the article) is in cahoots with Google and mapquest to put in fake streets on their maps.  How funny is this article, I feel dumber now.

Did call the SD "pow-leece" and the number rings to an automated voicemail. I selected the option of talking to a "receptionist" in operations and they said they don't have an active case concerning Ashford University, but are getting too many calls like mine asking. They would LOVE to get a hold of your contact information to ask you to retract the BS line you put out on your "article" concerning "contacting the San Diego Detectives...". I sent them the link to your "article" and your profile, so contact them directly at the number you posted and ask for "operations". Tell them who you are and I promise they will take great care of you and solve your problem.Doing my job to clean the streets of ignorance and mental "fishy flopping".... one "whackjob" at a time.

Lol thats great. Personally, last week I sent the link through the channels at Ashford University for their people to handle. Started with a low level worker who forwarded it to their supervisor and so on. I am hoping it ends with her being sued, just because I can't stand the ignorance of this "article".

Stix

Hey, thanks for all the input from everyone but have any of you actually graduated from Ashford University? I am a known sceptic, mostly because at this point in my life I can't afford to take any great finacial risks. You all have very intriguing and some-what covincing arguments but for gods-sakes I just want to know that I am not making a mistake before its too late if this falls through bancrupcy is just around the corner. So stop raggin on the post and tell us about a real success story. NO Offence intended but I feel like I am being hounded by tellamarketers every time the enrolment counselors call ( which is twice a day every day except sunday) and the forcefulness and persistence is what led me to Investigate this school, I really can't afford any type of identity theft or scams as I said before. PS. Please excuse my grammar I have been investigating your links for nearly seven hours now and I am tired please get back to me if you have something that can help.

Stix: I am a graduate of Ashford University...BA in Business Administration. I am just about half way through my Master's program in Public Administration. I have had nothing but exemplary service from all aspects of the college from enrollment, to financial aid, to academic guidance. I took advantage of the "SmartTrack" program that allowed me to take master's courses as electives for my BA degree, and then transferred as credits toward my MPA. This program allowed me to remain working full-time while completing my higher education goals. If that is not a success story, I do not know what is.

TheGraduate

Hi Stix,  I am a PROUD student of Ashford University and I am graduating in July 2010.  Let me tell you,  THEY ARE VERY HELPFUL!  They do everything according to the rules and regulations and it's not a corrupt school. I love the staff, my academic supervisor and financial aid counselor.  They helped me from the beginning to the end as an online student and from the minute I entered the Student Portal, they walked me through everything that I needed to know.  It is just like my "physical" orientation and they never left me "hanging".  They respond to all my telephone calls by email or calling me back at a decent time.  They keep you posted with the latest news.  Every time I have computer problems the instructors are very understanding and they will give you a reasonable time to complete your homework, so you will not lose any points. They are on top of everything and I highly recommend this university to any person who wants to complete their bachelor's degree. It seems like this piece of writing is from someone who is ignorant and has a learning difficulty and I don't know what she is trying to prove.  The content of this item needs to go in the toilet and flush it with that, "One Drop" powerful deodorizer.  I recommend, though that you use the whole bottle, because this editorial that is coming from "uncensored news" smells horrible! See you this ending of July....

Another Ashford Graduate

Hello Graduate, and all readers on this board!First, congratulations to you on your pursuit of higher education, Graduate.I have worked for Ashford University for over two years, and will be a graduate in 4 weeks.  There will always be disgruntled former employees in every business. Sometimes a job is not a good fit, and we are adults who choose our vocation and employers.   I am not in Enrollment, but was for a year and a half before moving into Financial Services.  It is a joy helping students by offering a modality that helps people continue education when their current circumstances make attending on-campus impossible.  I am one of those people, and I am proud of Ashford University.  In addition, I have attended both NAU and ASU, and although they are excellent schools, there were not as many resources available to me when I attended.  No one helped me with my financial aid.  As a person in the financial aid department here, there are times when I will spend an hour or two hours with one student in a single day, if that student needs that kind of support.  I can't think of any other universities that offer that level of support.Again, Graduate, congrats to you.

Yet another Ashford Graduate

I have recently received my BA in Social and Criminal Justice at Ashford University "On-Line", and I was so impresseed with their program, I am currently enrolled in their MBA program, of which thus far has been extremely rewarding. I am retired Army, thus qualifying me for all of the outstanding military benefits and discounts the school offers. Honestly, I have not had one single problem throughout the process and would recommend the school to anyone seeking higher education. It's just amazing to me that so many people want to point fingers and raise false accusations before interviewing or even truly investigating these matters. It's almost as if they received their information from the tabloids and posted it here, but thank you all for the comic relief!!

Bill Dejaynes

I am a current Ashford University student, and I havn't had any of the problems stated in the "wack jobs" post. I love this school and hope anybody looking for an online college will concider this school. The academic advisors and all the support staff have been nothing but helpful and courtious. The professors and T.A.'s are very knowledgeable about the classes they teach, and go out of their way to make sure the student is learning. I have never taken college course until now, the experience has been amazing. I hope to have my education complete in just over two years. So, I say to you the nay sayers and sceptics of this school, investigate it one more time, this time take it a little slower and really find out the truth about Ashford University.

To all deluded Ashford students, prospective students, Ashford employees or "execs" posing here as students, or anyone interested: Check out this link. This provides UNDENIABLE proof that Ashford University (Iowa, England, Wherever... they're all the same one) is an utter fraud. It is a billion dollar company, constantly under investigation, who are nothing more than a diploma mill with a morbid obsession with money, greed, and scamming the public. They even sell other "licenses" such as fake international driving licenses. They do have fake addresses (such as the one on green lanes in London) and fake campuses, etc. They copy their websites and details from other real universities, most of the time word-for-word and steal the pictures lol. What a JOKE. Can you spell L-A-Z-Y? They are nothing more than a fabrication with shoddy "professors" who scam the government out of millions and billions of dollars in financial aid, leaving the student with the debt and a joke of an education. If you go to Ashford, get out now. You're throwing your money away and racking up hundreds of thousands in debt that you're liable for. Now... let's see what the FBI, Federal Trade Commission, and other experts have to say on the subject of "Ashford University" and many others (many owned by the same people) shall we? Normal 0 MicrosoftInternetExplorer4 /* Style Definitions */ table.MsoNormalTable {mso-style-name:"Table Normal"; mso-tstyle-rowband-size:0; mso-tstyle-colband-size:0; mso-style-noshow:yes; mso-style-parent:""; mso-padding-alt:0in 5.4pt 0in 5.4pt; mso-para-margin:0in; mso-para-margin-bottom:.0001pt; mso-pagination:widow-orphan; font-size:10.0pt; font-family:"Times New Roman";} And there you have it. Look at this rambling INSANITY! Once again crap is illiterately thrown everywhere with the fervor typical of someone suffering from schizophrenia. Apparently Ashford University is part of a huge, sinister Global syndicate intent on World Domination. This is proved by the author (obviously the same person as the "article" originator) flailing about with exclamation points and use of capital letters. Wither you are in America or England, you are a victim of this highly profitable ("billions of dollars stolen") criminal organization; and the Federal Government is playing along! In a final fit of lunacy, this whack job ice cream sunday is topped with a cherry; an unreachable URL.I offer more evidence to SUPPORT the whack jobs claim:If you look at the letters on the light bulb in your refrigerator, you will see "Ashford University 666". Do not stare too long. The letter "A" is found in the label for a can of SPAM; what does THAT mean?Ashford spelled backwards is DROFSHA. When reassembled back to its original configuration...you have Ashford!!!

I actually did check out this PDF. The author mistakes the Ashford University in England (which proved to be a scam) with Ashford University in Clinton Iowa. She/he thinks that it's some kind of franchise college. In actuality, they just happen to have the SAME NAME! There is NO relationship with the scam school in England and this established college in America. So look at the PDF file she/he provides and then visit w w w . ashford . eduThis will make the author look like a total idiot and ease anyone's concerns...no stop bothering me with this stupidity.
