The Assasination of Obama

I was listening to the Ron Reagan Show a week or two ago and one of his guests said something rather profound and interesting. Her statement somewhat suggested the following, "Since certain fringes within America cannot assassinate Obama in the literal sense, they have adopted a more effective plot that is meant to assassinate his character."

Upon further reflection it seemed to make sense in some capacity. The idea is quite simple in theory and implementation; hurl anything that is defamatory towards his character, politics and popular appeal regardless of whether or not it is true or false; say something that may be an obvious lie and then simply apologize for it later knowing fully well that the damage has been done thanks to Youtube, Twitter, the Blogosphere and an overzealous news media that doesn't seem to care about fact checking and context. We saw it during his campaign when they tried with commendable effort to shackle him to Farrakhan, Bill Ayers and Rev Wright using absurd Sarah Palin quotes such as this one, "Obama is palling around with terrorists." We see it now during his presidency. The last couple of months we've seen Obama tagged as a socialist by Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity and the like; seen the 'Birther' movement with the help of CNN commentator Lou Dobbs question his citizenship; we've seen the crazy "Tea Party" protests, have heard congressman Joe Wilson call the President a liar and a Pastor pray for Obama's death while using Bible scriptures to justify it. I would have mentioned Glen Beck but there is far too much to cite. We've heard absurd rumors that Obama is brainwashing American youth into being socialists andbuilding concentration camps in Montana. And now it seems as though every time a Black person says or does something stupid they tie it to Obama or ask his opinion on it; A couple of days ago they asked him about Kanye; today Rush Limbaugh said the following ""Obama's America - White Kids Get Beat Up With The Black Kids Cheering" referring to a news report about a white kid who got beat up on a school bus by a black kid (http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2009/09/16/rush-limbaugh-obamas-amer_n_288371.html)

Although rudimentary and somewhat crude in its nature, the strategy seems to have an effect. It may appear absurd to the Intellectual but the effects have become obvious when you look at Obama's poll numbers, books with suggestive titles such as "The Obama Nation" (Abomination), the media obsession with anything Black and the muddying of the Healthcare debate. The strategy helps create a skewed understanding of Obama and his policies. We learn from history that we learn nothing from history and as a result it repeats itself, this isn't anything new (Martin Luther King Jr, Nelson Mandela, Anita Hill etc)
