Atheist attacked by religious zealot, judge lets attacker off
The local director of an atheist organization in the state of Pennsylvania dressed up as a character he created called Zombie Mohammad, while participating in a parade in that state. It was a satire and criticism of Islam. He was attacked by a Muslim man. Video of this attack exists.
The Muslim who attacked him admitted to the attack. So, what happens? The attacker gets off because the judge lectures the atheist that in Muslim nations who could get the death penalty for criticism or even mockery of Islam and Mohammad Yes, and so what!
The video that showed this attack was not allowed in as testimony. It seems, because the judge didn't want to convict this this man. I am an atheist. If an atheist attacks a Muslim, Hindu or Christian because of something he found offensive, and I am a judge, I will convict that person. My personal beliefs on religion do not matter. It is the harm or violence that that person causes.
The Muslim attacker stated he wanted to show his child his defense of Islam. Fine, do that through your speech. That is why we have a First Amendment. I have, and I will continue to be, a strong supporter of the free exercise rights of Muslims. They have a right to build a mosque or an Islamic center, wherever a church or syngogue can be built. They have a right to advocate their beliefs.
Most of them are peaceful. Most of them believe in secular principles to degree stronger than that of conservative Christians here in the U.S. After all, it is not Muslims but Christians conservatives who are denying in the U.S. the ability of gays to marry.
It is Christianity that has led to blue laws which ban the buying of used cars on Sundays in Wisconsin. It is Christianity that has banned sex toys in Alabama. But, I will not give a free pass to intolerance by Muslims. When necessary I will criticize them, and the judge who gave them a free pass.
P.S. the man who dressed up as Zombie Mohammad served tours overseas in the military in the Middle East. Once again, so much for the lie, no atheists in foxholes.
