First of all.. my heart goes out to the families of those killed. It is more than likely that they did not deserve to die in this fashion.

Is it just me, or do these types of killings seem to happen more in places where the 'gun culture' is celebrated..?

In order to answer this question honestly, you must first accept the fact that the US is a violent culture, founded on violence. Some would call it genocide. Depending on your perspective, you may feel the need to justify this fact, and if that inclination is overwhelming, then it is YOU that's part of this problem.

The way I understand it, the South in particular, will always cling to owning weapons of mass destruction as one of the most the fundamental of rights as being an American. Somehow, they seem to feel less than without owning weapons and cling to the false notion that freedom is somehow preserved. I'm sure it's just a coincidence that the ancestors of many of these same folks used weapons as tools of oppression.against people they felt were less than.

It's probably too late to modify this mode of thought into something more constructive. However, unless you happen to be on the receiving end of some bullets, you may have the pleasure to witness the actual decline of a country that could have been so much more.

Only then will you realize, and of course many shall remain eternally clueless, that your very selves are more than susceptible to being treated in the same fashion that you accepted and and in fact promoted for others deemed less than.

You can call it karma, as the (conditional) Christians can refer to it as judgment, in either event, your versions of freedom will manifest in ways YOU never imagined. It's already happening, your sicknesses make you too damn blind to see it.

See ya at the range..!

So Lance, the most deaths, gun culture of the south, is that right? Have you ever heard of New York City? Chicago? Detroit? Compton? Philadelphia? I would just about guarantee you live in or near one of these cities. The problem with people like you is that you can't see the forest for the tree's. You are not willing to put yourself under that same microscope that you so willingly use to judge everyone else! Why not become a little less sterotypical and use common sense before making such unprepossesing remarks. The truth is that this is an almost daily event somewhere in this country. I do not own any guns, however, if  I wanted one, I'm sure it would not be that hard to obtain. It does not matter who you are or where you live, whether it's drugs or guns, anyone can have access to it if you really want it.

Well,  that is a really positive thing to say about the US.  What is the  population of the United States?  306,295,189.  Out of that figure what is the figure of people that are violent?  And of that figure how many are are southerners that cling to weapons of "mass" destruction?  When you can state those figures,  then you may find that your statements are out of line.  State the facts.

Wax on peotically, and write on,  but your liberal crap is not based on statistics.  If you think the US is so violent then why are you here?

Nothing to take personally.  US is a great country but violence has been the part of the culture.  It is deepening in our lifestyle.  This is dangerous.

Shoe me one country that is completely void of violence.  You don't need a gun to kill someone.  Some cultures just use knives to cut peoples heads off.  And for added fun, they video tape the event.  Oh, I know what your going to say, "But these were a few fanatics, and you shouldn't label an entire country as crazed, knife wielding killers."  And you would be right!!!

Well, what all I want to say is carrying weapons should not be allowed.   Whatever the incidents happening like this doesnt make the healthy and safe society.

If you take guns away from citizens...then the only people with guns will be criminals. Criminals have guns and I know they didn't walk into a store ad purchase them. If some lunatic wants to end someones life, the weapon of choice doesn't have to be a gun!

Lance Watkins- That was the stupidest remark I have ever come across regarding gun control. A majority of weapons used in violent crime are obtained illegally. So what exactly would outlawing guns do to reduce crime rate? Also, a gun is not considered a weapon of mass destruction and the South is not a haven for violent maniacs.

"In order to answer this question honestly, you must first accept the fact that the US is a violent culture, founded on violence. Some would call it genocide"

Some would call it genocide? What are you talking about? Do you even know the meaning of the word genocide? Honestly, the detriment to any society is morons like you, not the guns they carry.

Lance, the rest of you as well: This isn't just a case of Gun violence. This is yet another case of Domestic Violence. Expect to see more of it as more couples quarrel over money, unemployment, regrets, etc. And for your information, firearms are just one of many methods of murder used in Domestic Violence cases. Don't read "guessimated" statistics; Read the real case files. I dare you to do your own, gritty research on this subject matter (Homicide in all forms). I know you won't. At best, you'll take shortcuts.

Only some killings are committed with Guns. For a start, ever since the Brady Bill, Gun prices continue to escalate as well. They're increasingly diffcult to buy on current budgets, both Legally and Illegally. If you're a Convicted Felon, have been found to be Mentally Unstable and/or Delinquent on Child Support: You cannot pass the usual background checks found through normal channels of procurement. So, what's a killer to do? Use whatever they can get their hands on! This includes even their bare hands: Stabbings, Blunt Weapons, Beating and Strangulation are very popular methods, not just Guns. They just don't get the same kind of Press coverage. But Guns are scary and fear sells News.

This case in particular, is about Domestic Violence, not just Gun Violence. Expect to see more of it as couples argue more frequently regarding money and other related issues. People lose thier jobs, get pay-cuts and yet the Bills keep a'coming. Then the blame game starts - who spent this, why don't we have that, etc., etc. Sooner or later, someone starts crying...or bleeding.

Yes Sir, when the streets and homes become more and more dangerous, this is when you look into arming yourself. Be it to protect your family, or protect yourself from your family. You don't let yourself become disgusted with the murderous impulses of your fellow Man. There's not really the time and place for that. Not now. To allow yourself to be disarmed, to lay down your weapons, will not make the problems go away. In the very least, it sets you up to be an easier victim yourself. But, as they always say - Live and Learn. If you're lucky.

I live in Athens, GA, and I can tell you that this is not what most northerners think of as "South" and George Zinkhan was not what you would think of as a gun-toting redneck.  He was a longstanding professor of the University of Georgia.  Someone who fit his profile could be found anywhere to the north, south, east, or west of the United States - not to mention overseas (he taught some classes in Amsterdam as well).

The majority of Athenians are liberal-minded, creative, forward-thinking.  Your comments could perhaps hold some weight in some instances, but in this one you are wrong.  This is a matter that has more to do with a crazy and jealous man who was pushed over the edge and murdered three people than a Southern gun culture.  This was not random violence.

Athens is a loving, supportive and close-knit community and we were all shaken and devastated that something like this could possibly happen anywhere, much less in our generally safe town.

Lance, you stereotyping, bigoted simpleton..of COURSE it's "just you."  I grew up in New Jersey, went to college in Virginia, and found the latter anecdotally - as much validity as your rant - to be far more civilized and safe than my homestate.  Considering 280 million guns in this country the rate of gun violence is incredibly small and largely confined to specific populations and geographic circumstances, mostly where criminal gangs flourish.  This was a case of domestic violence, nothing more.  But is living here bothers you, you can always..leave. If not..douche, take a midol, and have a nap-py. You'll feel much better.
