Britain's most senior law officer - Baroness Scotland of Asthal, the Attorney-General - is facing questions following the revelation that she hired an illegal immigrant as a housekeeper. Claiming to have 'unknowingly' hired the 27 Tongan, questions have been raised about her diligence in checking on her employee's credentials.

The UK Border Agency has announced an investigation into the matter, and Baroness Scotland could face a fine of up to £10,000 if it is found that she acted in bad faith or failed to exercise due diligence.

Gordon Brown has so far defended his minister, saying that "I think people will want to wait to see the results of the investigation . . . before they pass judgment." Naturally, opposition MPs are already taking a tougher line and demanding action from the beleagured Prime Minister.

It is thought that the cleaner originally applied for a UK student visa but had outstayed its expiry by 3 years before the problem came to light.

This issue is likely to reignite the debate over immigration to the UK, which has become a running sore for politicians of all the mainstream parties - much to the delight of the far-right, anti-immigrant British National Party.

Whether the anwer lies in tougher controls, better vetting or a simpler visa system remains to be seen, but with a general election now under 8 months away there is little chance of the issue going away.
