Inside Story-Mauritania's political puzzle -07 Aug 08 Part 1

Following the military coup that took place earlier this week, the African Union has suspended Mauritania's membership. The coup was orchestrated by General Muhammad Ould Abdel Aziz, who also staged the coup that brought about the elections which Sidi Mohamed Ould Cheikh Abdallahi won. Abdallahi is currently held in an unknown location.

The continental body's move is the latest international condemnation of a coup that at home has received a mixture of support and muted criticism from various political camps but, by now, is largely being met with indifference by the population.

"African Union will suspend Mauritania until the country returns to a constitutional government," Tanzanian Foreign Affairs Minister Bernard Membe said on behalf of the AU.

President Sidi Ould Cheikh Abdallahi is being held along with the country's prime minister in an undisclosed location.
Also, no date has been set for a new election.
