Nicolas Sarkozy Tuesday condemned a "brutal and unjust verdict" after the condemnation of the Burmese opponent Aung San Suu Kyi and three years' imprisonment, a sentence that the head of the Burmese junta has decided to reduce by half and commute in house arrest . The french president "condemned the brutal and unjust verdict which now affects Mrs. Aung San Suu Kyi, Nobel Peace Prize", has informed the Elysée in a statement. "This political trial has had the sole purpose of preventing Mrs. Aung San Suu Kyi to lead its fight for a free and democratic Burma," he adds.

"The Burmese authorities confirm that decision inique their choice to ignore the urgent messages from the international community," says the president who "asks the EU to react rapidly by the adoption of new sanctions against the Burmese regime, which should aim particularly the resources it benefits directly in the field of timber and rubies.
