The Nazi sign at the site of the Auschwitz concentration, in Poland has been stolen. The grim and cynical Nazi sign says Arbeit Macht Frei in German. The English translation is "Work Sets You Free"

Reports say the sign was stolen around 3 in the morning in Poland. The thieves apparently used a ladder and screwdriver and managed to rip the Auschwitz signn off its moorings.

"The wide iron sign — across a gate at the former Nazi death camp in southern Poland where more than 1 million people died during World War II — was removed by being unscrewed on one side and torn off on the other, police spokeswoman Katarzyna Padlo said".

Paul Sawicki, the Auscwitz museum's curator told the Associated Press that the theft was a "desecration." He went on to say that a replica is now in place but " 'it was shocking that the tragic history of the site did not stop the thieves. We believe that the perpetrators will be found soon and the inscription will be returned to its place.'"

This is terrible.

Surely the scrap metal is worth more than 5,000 zloty?

I'd suspect my grandmother, but she has a solid alibi, being on a different continent. (She'd want to destroy the sign, though, not sell it)

I do not blame your Grand Mother for wanting to destroy it Jordan, I can not even imagine the pain that the KZ prisoners endured for years.

But the sign has to stay as a reminder to what happen there and under what perversity it did happen as well.

Stealing the sign for scrap metal would be like desecrating a holy grave. Million have died there. This can not be allowed to ever repeat it self any where, those where the words by leaders that let the sign stay in place after WWII.

Still we had other Genocide's since, all the more reason to keep on remembering.

This is not for first time, nor last time, that signs and artifacts have been stolen from musuems, public places.Erection by neo-nazis being near impossible, sign may fetch a handsome price by some follower of Hitler.

the most important aspect to remember is the 1 million who were killed which was mainly about 900,000 Jews. The sign is just a piece of metal and has already been replaced.

Not only Jews, remember it.

I pointed that out in my comment

Although Jews were the majority of those killed the interesting part is not about the jews (since that story has been adequately told) but the stories of those who were NOT Jews.  We have not heard enough about the non-Jews who were sent to the camps.

This is really sick stuff! I'm inclined to agree with t k kidwai here. There seems to be a lot of unconscionable people out there in the world today that take great delight in dismantling historical evidence and reminders piece by piece.

Please allow me to suggest a book about those you speak.

A Woman's Prison Journal:  Germany 1944

By Louise Rinser

This is her true story, and she was neither Jewish, nor communist.  She was sent to a women's prison in Traunstein in Bavaria.  She kept a secret diary while she awaited an almost certain death sentence for high treason for which she was framed.  She speaks about many others who were imprisoned including to mention a few, Germans; Polish; French; Jehovah Witnesses.  It gives insight to Nazi Germany and their methods of objectifying human beings both Jewish and non-Jewish.

One of the questions she poses in the book: "Would it not be a thousand times better to get rid of prisons and detention centres?  People are never improved by humiliation, by crushing them, but by education, by raising their awareness of themselves and by correctly guiding their energies.  If that could only be understood for once."

She concludes early in her incarceration that before coming to prison she judged people readily, but now she realized that the nets of human suffering are cast widely and at the root is poverty, emotions, thoughtless, and blundering.  She suggests that acts of transgression rise out of mental incapability which are better suited to be resolved by a psychiatrist than a judge.

She was very much ahead of time in these thoughts.

Interesting comments.  I will look for the book.  I will have to disagree in so far as I do not believe that any form of counciling would save society from the Bacon Brothers, paedophiles or people like Charles Manson.  Prisons have a very important function in keeping us safe from these kinds of scumbags.

a211423: Absolutely well-thought-out and relevant comment, on your part, as usual! I agree 100 percent!

"This is her true story, and she was neither Jewish, nor communist."

The criminally insane do require life time incarceration.

The people in the prison with Ms. Rinser are not criminally insane, and many are political prisoners.

I assumed you were referring to present day Canada as the context for your comments.  We are not big imprisoners of political activists who are innocent of crimes.  What time and country were you referring to?

Find it and them.

This sign is probably quite valuable on the black market. It is one of the only things on the planet constructed entirely by jews. It would be impossible to replace since the only work jews have ever done is when they were forced to by the nazi's.

The sign was recovered Sunday night, five suspects were detained.
