Good health, freedom of choice, political liberty, civil rights - these, along with high income, make Australians the most prosperous people in the world, found a study by the Dubai-based Legatum Institute ranking countries according to their prosperity.

The privately-funded think tank noted that there was no direct correlation between wealth and happiness. While it was true that income was a good indicator of wellbeing in very poor countries, earnings did not link with happiness in rich countries.

At a time when Australians face rising unemployment and falling incomes, it will be interesting to see if the above remains true.

I'm not surprised. We have been very fortunate, but this real estate boom bust is also impacting Australia,  Now we are seeing a serious slow down in our export markets. ...and the same bail-outs have taken us from a surplus of over 20B to deficit figures within the last 6 months.

Yesterday, I heard an unprecedented debate with Guy Pearce, on ABC-Radio National, re. the folly of carbon trading policy in Australia.–Quarry vision: why coal is no longer important:

Download it here: http://www.abc.net.au/rn/foraradio/
–Environmental advocate Guy Pearse argues that mining and coal are no longer the backbone of the Australian economy. He elaborates on his Quarterly Essay and explains his dissatisfaction with the Government's response to climate change.
