Auto Bailout Close To Being a Done Deal
US politicians met Tuesday night to work out the details of a proposed $15 billion bailout of the big three automakers.
Congressional Democrats have proposed giving enough cash to General Motors and Chrysler to get them through the rest of the year. Ford would also be eligible for part of a loan.
Insiders suggest the deal will also create a new position with a nifty title to oversee the bailout.
The plan could see a vote as early as Wednesday. It creates a government "car czar," to be named by President George W. Bush, to oversee the bailout billions and an auto industry restructuring. The czar would have to yank back the federal money if carmakers didn't do enough to reinvent themselves.Congressional Democrats want to add language they can reach up to the holding company, Cerberus Capital Management, if that happens, but the White House is "pushing back" according to one Democratic aide.
Of course, there are still a few details to work out.
The two key issues remaining to be resolved involve whether to block the auto companies from suing states over their greenhouse gas emission standards and how the bill can ensure taxpayers can get repaid for loans to Chrysler, a privately held company, in the event the company goes bankrupt.
The deal could meet with some resistance from Republicans. GOP Senator John Ensign has said he is prepared to filibuster the bill until he sees changes. Ensign is said to have the support of about half a dozen Republican senators.
