The recent attack at Fort Hood as well as other terrorist events both nationally and around the globe reveal a dilemma in society: people have differences of opinion -- even strong differences at times.  Talk politics or religion with people for any length of time and this will become quite evident.  The less evident thing, after many years of political diffusing of American history, is that the USA was indeed founded as a Christian nation.  It's beginnings were one of religious freedom...for (persecuted) Christians.  Yes, it's true that non-christians were permitted to some great measure of religious freedom, but the original intent of the founding fathers was one of freedom of Christian worship unfettered by the government, not one of kicking Christianity out of all things public.

Study it for yourself, if you disbelieve this.  Many, many documents reveal that the founding fathers of America wrote about, spoke of, and prayed to the almighty Christian God of the Bible.  Other lands and civilizations, past, present and future, might worship as they chose, but the new nation, America, found refuge in the Christian God and openly professed it.  There are numerous accounts in old writings that display their trust in God and remarkable instances of answered prayers and Divine providence in the early days of our nation.  It is thought that George Washington was once in the sites of a British soldier who for some reason refused to fire on him as an officer.  It is known that Washington, once thought dead after two horses had been shot out from under him, was alive and totally unhurt while having four bullet holes in his coat due to the intensity of battle.  Divine providence gave them courage, as it did to ancient Biblical figures such as Joshua, Gideon, and David.

In regard to Gideon, he himself, as many in modern America may now feel, wondered where God was.  In fact, he expressed this, amazingly, in the very presence of the angel of God! (Judges 6: 11-13; the Bible.)  These people knew of others who had seen the workings of God -- even Moses and others who had actually seen God with their own eyes! (Exodus 24: 9-11; the Bible).  Gideon acknowledged this, but as his people had slipped into a period of apostasy, the God they had previously served with vigor had not been as near, for among His attributes is holiness and truth: He does not share His glory with paganism for those far from Him in their hearts.  Only when they returned to God or cried out due to their unbearable hardships of life in rebellion, and the consequences of that, did God compassionately relent and help them.  You do not reward wicked children, do you?  So, too, God will hear as people return to Him in America and remember that it was He Who made America great.

The politial striving, posturing, and infighting is a sign of a gross lack of leadership.  Have you ever seen a kid in school who has such a good grasp of things that nobody can say anything other than in support and they submit themselves to his leadership in the matter?  It was that way with the biblical Joseph, who first suffered many things in preparation as he determined to serve God no matter what.  America's leaders have thrown Christians and their faith overboard.  They have rebelled and cast off the yoke that chafes them, as did the people that made the golden calf, first in Moses' day...and then again in the time of another Isralite, king Jeroboam.  Yet, the people will see that God is real and Lord.  People can mix words all they want and every man says and does what is right in his or her own eyes, but when the facts stare you in the face, it is different.

This happened in the prophet Samuel's day, when the real word of God was not heard much, yet Samuel became known, as his words never fell to the ground: they always came true.  It happened in Elijah's day, too, as the people, confused and uncertain about God, finally had their eyes opened as the holy prophet had water poured out, to soak his sacrifice to God, then prayed and fire fell from heaven to devour it entirely.  As the futility of political correctness soaks America and Christians and their faith is continually disdained, maligned and slighted -- even by our fearful and unbelieving leaders -- a giant is being awakened.  You see, while those living in mansions and ruling from "the hill" are oblivious to their sufferings and needs, they are learning to trust in God -- the Christian God -- out of necessity, ...and finding out that He IS real and able to save.  They are also seeing their false shepherds for what they are.  They are relearning what made America great -- God, ...and they are waking up: the "sleeping giant" is awaking.

"They are relearning what made America great -- God"

I think that you will find - if you should read real history - that what made America `great` was lending billions of dollars to countries at war, with a nice deal in interest as profit, then imposing themselves on the world stage as the power nation and then reaping what cash money can do.

As for the Christian thing - the last time I looked, Christ Himself would forgive just about anything, and detested indoctrination - which happens a lot to those who believe Bible-Thumpers!

One nutcase does not a nation or religion make (read Palin, a total nut-job) - this guy was a nutter. And a nutter with a gun is very, very dangerous.

I have to agree with that

Interesting fact of the last century was that the vast majority of killing was in the name of secular causes.

WWI

Russian Revolution, and the following civil war.

Stalin's collectivization

Japan's war with China

WWII

Korean War

IndoChina - VietNam, Cambodia

Mao's Great Leap

Iran vs Iraq

Those are the obvious one, but better we should watch out for the dangerous "religious" nuts.

Very nice, Hugh Askew !

We need to watch out for all nuts and religious ones get no special exemptions

If this article is proposing/implying violence or disobedience against secular law  then we shouldn't care about the motivation, only the outcome.

Lets not forget that "Christian" Jesus spoke a language called Aramaic, the word for God in that language is Allah. If Jesus is God or a part of God was he praying to himself ? You mentioned Moses, a prophet of Islam, is he really part of your religion ? Have you read the first commandment ? What about the murder and enslavement of native Americans, are they the values advocated by Christ ? America was founded on gold and the pursute of money. Good things have come out of America, many people have lived free - er than they otherwise would. But... the land of the free... not yet !

A similar term can have multiple meanings.  Two people can say "God" & have different ideas of who God is; for example, the man "Job", who likely lived prior to Moses' time, had friends who came and talked to him about God during his time of misfortune.  However, when God finally revealed Himself & spoke, He said that they had not spoken truthfully, correctly or knowledgeably about Him as Job had.  As for Moses, people could learn a lot about their own cynicism from him: Moses was so humble, meek & willing toward God that God was willing to speak face to face with him, like a friend, and not merely in dreams, visions or riddles as with even usual with prophets or prophetesses.  If even holy prophets were confined in their relationship with God, what does that not say about Moses and also what does it say about us, who can hardly say we are holy like them, right?

As for those who do evil while professing faith in God, didn't Jesus Himself spend much of his ministry dealing with that problem among religious leaders of those days?  Also, if you knew your history, you'd know AMerica was NOT founded on gold but rather on those fleeing religious persecution and hoping to have freedom to seek God according to their Christian beliefs in a new land.  THEY actually had cordial relations with the native americans until politics fell in on it all.  Being ruled by the British gov't., they were subject to their mandates and decisions, but probably still could have done much better, too.  Of course, when opposing powers of the time used the native peoples for allies in war against the colonists, they found themselves unable to ally themselves & also war, both with & against various tribes.

Every enterprising or greedy person seeks a quick "buck", both then & now, so it is no surprise that many in America, or who came to America, worked on that, and greed does corrupt people.  America had been a place of great opportunity, and looking at how businesses & prosperity flees from places full of corruption, vice, war, strife & fear,...it is easy to understand that a place where Christian values USED to be more commonly admired & emulated would be a place of prosperity.  Consider how many more businesses, tourists and "snowbirds" would flock to Mexico & central America if they were able to feel more safe & secure there!

I love to talk about Moses, does it not say in the Bible that one will come like him from among the brothers, if you study the life of Mohammed you will see many aspects of personality and major life events that are the same as Moses. Mohammed's tribe, the Quresh, are indeed descended from the same line as Moses. They are family ! Albeit distant cousins

Mohammed cannot really compare to Moses as far as being like him, I think.  COnsider all the miracles, talking with God & his face glowing radiantly from it, miracle after miracle -- the person referred to is undoubtedly Jesus of Nazareth.  Moses' tribe was an Israelite tribe that stayed in & married within the Israelite people, so unless someone forsook his people & moved away from the Israelites, their temple, etc. or forsook them during their captivity or diaspora, I doubt that Mohammed can be said to have descended from Moses.  Sorry, but that's the reality of it all, and if some descendant of Moses di do like all that, I doubt it could any longer be traced back to Moses.  However, the descendants of Abraham include both Arabs & Israelis, and they are related.  This in itself cuold be a means for peace in the middle east, since they are related before God by descendancy from Abraham and somewhat like "brothers", distantly.

Mortal religious prosecution to flee to America is not why people came to America. It may have been part of it..but was not the real reason. They saw the opportunity to take land...that supposedly nobody owned....so it was there for the taking.. The reason I disagree with your religious claim is because many religions that began in America such as the Mormon Latter Day Saints suffered persecution by whites... While Native American Indians were persecuted by both.

If you consider the hardships & many deaths facing those who came over by ships on long voyages, and diseases too, the spector of death seems too great for so many common people.  However, freedom from a severe persecution or freedom to worship God according to one's conscience would dare to face those dangers more readily.  The Mormans were not begun elsewhere and did not begin until well after the colonies got their start, so nothing can be related to Mormanism in this.  In fact, they are proof of what I say, as they in the face of persecution by other whites, same as the first colonists, left all and travelled far away into the western areas of North America, even in the face of many dangers, to gain religious freedom, too.  Some Native Americans were initially friends with the first whites.  They also were constantly at war with each other.  Precolumbian life in the Americas was not all peace and flowers -- it was full of warfare.  What was the difference to them if they fought whites or other Native Americans, as with their own they sometimes won & sometimes lost; but, the whites increased in greater numbers, with greater military support, canons, etc., etc.  -- The difference is that they met people to fight who overwhelmed them.  I am not defending their wrongs & broken treaties, however, and I personally find much to benefit from the Native American peoples and that there have been many tragedies regarding them.  If some group, like the Aztecs, had invented gunpowder, canons, etc. and conquered most of Central & North America in the constant precolumbian warfare among Native Americans, would it have been so different?

I see the eternal question remains....searching for religious freedom still exists today. One can not find it in America...when the State uses the military to control society.. If I lived in the US I would have to pay to the state in taxes to support the Military something quite at odds to my religion.....People say most Religions are tax exempt....but that is for the Churches not for the people who attend..and work in the real society......

djermano,..."religious freedom" was indeed accomplished for those who then sought it.  They were christians, and now that "freedom" is being taken away for a sort of political correctness.  A Muslim in a muslim country HAS religious freedom to practice their religion, too.  People think that the USA must be everything for everyone, but that is only confusion, weakness & folly, as all the earth has no such thing.  Is the USA supposed to be everyone's mongrel dog?  Nobody else has SO MUCH mixture of ways & beliefs and peoples as the USA.  Our false leaders have raped us to please others rather than their own citizens.

What if you lived in a devout muslim town where, somehow, one secretive child rapist lived.  Would it be right for your leaders to force on the whole village the ways & "rights" of raping children for the comfort of that one person?!  No.  Well, sir, that is what has been happening in America.  We do not go to a Muslim or Hindu nation and compell them to be christians, yet everyone wants the USA to adapt to make them comfortable here, whatever they may believe and regardless of the results upon our culture.  Ruling over the many for the sake of the few, and giving the minority special privileges, is rather unlike every nation on earth.   However, for leaders of a nation to subvert the will of the vast majority of the population in order to seize power for themselves...is nothing new.  It may also be considered to be either sedition or treason.
