Six bombs exploded near five Shi'ite mosques across Baghdad, the Iraqi capital, on Friday, having killed at least 28 people and injured more than 60 people, according to Iraqi officials.

The number of those killed and injured is still rising and it is already clear that this is one of the deadliest attacks in recent weeks.

This series of car bombings took place between 12:45 p.m. and 1:30 p.m. in northern, eastern, and south-eastern Baghdad in predominantly Shi'ite working-class neighborhoods.

One of the attacks struck a mosque in the the northern Baghdad neighborhood of Shaab, resulting in the largest number of casualties - 5 civilians killed and 30 wounded, said two Iraqi police officials and a medical official.

Deadly blasts target Baghdad mosques - 31 Jul 09

The bombs targeted Shi'ite Muslims as they were leaving the mosques after Friday prayers. Shi'ite Muslims have long been the targets of Sunni Islamist al Qaeda.

The attacks have heightened worries amongst many Iraqi citizens that their own government forces are not yet capable to provide sufficient security, as the U.S. combat forces withdrew from Iraqi cities last month.

The bombings shattered a period of relative calm in the Iraqi capital, raising to at least 303 Iraqis killed in what has been one of the least deadly months in Iraq for both Iraqi civilians and U.S. troops since the war began. Seven American troops have been killed — the lowest monthly total since the war started in March 2003, according to an AP tally.

The officials all remain anonymous because they were not authorized to release any information.

The attack also underscores concerns about the abilities of Iraqi security forces to maintain security gains now that US troops have withdrawn from major urban areas. Some Sunni insurgents still seek to re-ignite sectarian violence with the majority Shiites and reverse Iraq's security gains in the past two years.
