Bahia Bakari, 14, Sole Survivor of Yemenia Airbus Crash Speaks

Bahia Bakari, 14, is the sole known survivor of the June 30, 2009 Yemenia airbus crashed that claimed 152 lives including that of her mother. One of four children born to Kassim Bakari and his wife, Bahia Bakari tells a harrowing story of 12 hours spent in the ocean waiting to be rescued.
According to Bahia she could hear other people calling out shortly after the crash, suggesting there were other survivors in the initial hours after Flight 626 went down. However, after 12 years in the rough waters of the Indian Ocean Bahia Bakari was the only person found alive.
Bahia was so weak when rescuers got to her that she could not even swim to the life buoy thrown to her in the water. One of the rescue workers dove into the ocean to pull the exhausted young girl to safety. Bahia is said to be doing well and will be heading home to France as early as July 2, 2009.
According to aviation statistics the Yemenia airbus crash is the second deadliest airplane disaster with a single survivor found. Yemenia Airways plans to make initial payments of €20,000 to the families of the victims of Flight 626.
Kassim Bakari, the girl's father, told French news outlets that he had spoken to his daughter on the telephone. "I asked her what happened and she said: 'We saw the plane fall in the water. I found myself in the water. I was hearing people speak but I couldn't see anyone. I was in the dark. I couldn't see anything. Daddy, I couldn't swim very well. I grabbed on to something but I don't know what'."
Bakari, who has three other children, said that when he heard about the crash he thought he would never again see his wife and oldest daughter. "She is a very, very shy girl. I would never have thought she would have survived like this. I can't say that it's a miracle, I can say that it is God's will," he said.
He said his daughter had not yet been told that her mother was dead. "They told her she was in a room next door, so as not to traumatise her. But it's not true. I don't know who is going to tell her."

Johannesburg/Sanaa, June 30 (DPA) A five year-old child was being brought ashore Tuesday, after surviving a Yemen Airways plane crash near the Comoros Islands, officials said. Abdillah Mougni, secretary-general of Comoros republic’s transport ministry, said the child, whose gender he did not know, was being brought to shore by boat.
Mougni also said only one body had been recovered from the water so far, although three bodies had been seen floating in the water from helicopters. The Comoros islands are located between Madagascar and Mozambique, off south-eastern Africa.
