Mutiny in Bangladesh

The bloody mutiny by Bangladesh Rifles (BDR) soldiers in the capital Dhaka has spread outside the city even though they had laid their arms at their headquarters.

Police chiefs in six border districts have told News agency AFP that guards in their areas had joined a rebellion unfolding in the capital Dhaka since Wednesday. Bangladeshi news channels  are also reporting rebellions in 12 border districts -- or roughly a quarter of the areas where border security forces are stationed.

The event, Fifty Bangladeshi army officers were feared dead after thousands of border guards,  sent Dhaka into a war footing yesterday as the paramilitaries fired several thousand shots from machine guns.

Mutinies by members of the paramilitary Bangladesh Rifles (BDR) have broken out in various towns around the country even as BDR violence in the capital Dhaka was being contained, police and witnesses said on Thursday.

Nearly 50 people were killed in Dhaka as BDR troops fought among themselves on Wednesday after shooting began in their headquarters over a pay dispute and other issues, a government minister said on Thursday.

The mutinous soldiers in Dhaka were laying down their arms on Thursday after accepting an offer of amnesty from the government, but outside the capital there were shooting incidents involving BDR troops in more than a dozen towns, local police officials told Reuters reporters.

"Fighting is raging outside the BDR camp, with troops coming on the street holding up guns and shooting," said a Reuters witness in Sylhet, in the northeast of the country.

There were no immediate reports of casualties.

The turmoil underscores the challenges facing Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

Hasina won parliamentary elections in December that returned the impoverished country to democracy after nearly two years of army-backed emergency rule, and the incident is a blow to her efforts to attract foreign investment and convince foreign aid donors the country is on a path to stability.

Hostage situation worsening:- The BDR headquarter in Dhaka has a capacity of housing 20,000 personnel. And, many of the officers are housed with their families in the same compound. Many women and children are trapped inside rooms and some inside toilets. Some of them contacted local media channels through mobile phones and said they are without food and water, trapped in terror. These are wives and children of the officers. Efforts are going on to release the women and children out of this situation. There are about 2,000 of them passing every moment in hard situation.

Update:- In a short speech, the Bangladesh PM sounded very emotional about the killings and urged the rebels not to kill ' your own brothers'. There was nothing new in the speech in terms of informations or actions taken, except, she sounded a warning note for the rebels if they do not surrender according to talks. She also informed of a high level enquiry committee into the matter. Strange new development:-
There are some strange developments observed along the borders on the Indian side; at some places we see that the BDR regiments are deserting their duty posts and walking off and away into their territorial lands leaving their duties of guarding the nation's borders. Indian border security personnel are unsure about what this new move means, but is already on the alert and keeping a watchful eye on developments.

A news correspondent reported that probably army is preparing for a 'final assault', however, this report is still unconfirmed whether government has ordered any move for the army. But a fresh gunbattle is reported between BDR and army.

Intelligence sources in India has alerted BSF authorities that Bangladesh Army's assault on the BDR can cause them to flee into Indian land to save their lives, and a fresh order has been issued on behalf of BSF so that none of the escaping BDR jawans are killed by the Indian guards, instead they will be asked to surrender and lay down arms and they will be provided safety for their lives.
