Amidst widespread allegations, lawsuits and arrests involving voter purging and irregularities in the United States ahead of the upcoming presidential election, both Barack Obama and John McCain have assembled armies of lawyers.

There will be no repetition of 2000 and 2004 it seems, as both sides are preparing for legal contests should the November election hit the same sort of fraud and purging issues that plagued the last two elections.

Oct. 20 (Bloomberg) -- Barack Obama and John McCain have a litigation game plan to accompany their election strategy.

Both candidates have armies of volunteers to ring doorbells and get voters to the polls. They are also forming squadrons of lawyers who are filing challenges and preparing in case Election Day doesn't settle the contest for the White House.

Legal battles unfolding in Ohio, Indiana and Wisconsin provide fresh evidence of the potential fights to come over ballot access in an election marked by unprecedented spending to increase the number of voters in strategically important states.

Rob Walker, I like this story. It's good stuff.

I fear if there is any hint of wrongdoing in the vote count and Obama doesn't win, there will be a war. Not just a legal war, but rioting etc.

I agree, in fact I would also be extremely upset if, with Obama leading etc, that he were to lose. Americans have so much at stake in this election that for Obama supporters to have their bubble burst now would be tragic. I am an example of just how strongly people may feel; I was born in Toronto but with two American parents (and i have lived in the U.S. prior to coming of age) I endeavored to assert my U.S. citizenship largely for the opportunity to vote in this election (which I have). For me, and I think for black Americans generally, Obama is a candidate they can embrace not simply for change which is obviously important, but also for hope, which they still need in order to overcome their history of struggle and how that informs their present. Barak Obama represents a stepping stone, a pillar and a foundation for respect and self respect. Its a romantic vision but as such, its merely evidence that people are inspired and need to be.
