Democrat Barack Obama has been elected the first black president of the United States, as his Republican rival John McCain conceded defeat.
Obama delivered his acceptance speech to cheering crowds at Grant Park in Chicago. He said: "It's been a long time coming, but tonight... change has come to America."
As he appeared on stage in front of tens of thousands of people, he said: "If there is anyone out there who still doubts that all things are possible... who still questions the power of democracy, tonight is your answer."
"We are and always will be the United States of America."
Obama paid tribute to Senator John McCain. "We are better off for the service rendered by this brave and selfless leader." He said he looked forward to working with McCain and Sarah Palin "to renew this nation's promise".
He added: "The road ahead will be long, the climb ahead will be steep.... but America I have never been more hopeful that we will get there. We as a people will get there," Obama said, while the crowd chanted: "Yes we can."
After the speech, Obama and his running mate Joe Biden were joined on stage by their wives and families.
Celebrations are taking place across Chicago, outside the White House in Washington DC, and in Kenya.
In Phoenix, Arizona, John McCain delivered his concession speech. He said: "The American people have spoken and they have spoken clearly." The crowd booed when McCain said he had called Obama to congratulate him on winning the presidency. McCain silenced the crowd.
"Senator Obama has achieved a great thing for himself and for his country. I applaud him for it."
McCain urged all Americans to find ways to come together, help restore prosperity and security and "leave our grandchildren a better country than we inherited."
"It is natural tonight to feel some disappointment but tomorrow we must move beyond it and work together to get our country moving again... The failure is mine, not yours," McCain told the crowd.

On November 4, 2008 @ 1:55PM EST, Ourvotelive.com reports that 1,299 problems and inquiries related to the elections have been made in Ohio. Cuyahoga County [where Cleveland is located] was declared the source of 237 of the 1,299 problems or 11%. There have been reports of polling problems, registration problems, and voting equipment malfunctions.

In Butte, Montana; a 38 year old man protested against Barack Obama by parking a trailer full of manure in front of the Obama campaign office in this city. Democrats are protesting but the man states that "change" by Obama is "full of manure". He also stated that the manure will "stay until after Election Day".

Kentucky and Vermont are done and projected, for the top slot anyway. Races for Senator and Representative are also of interest but will be less emphasized unless they need to kill some time.

BBC News has projected Obama to win New Hampshire. It appears that McCain is in trouble. Illinois and the District of Columbia has been projected in favour of Obama. Massachusetts and Delaware has also been projected for Obama.

I would like to add my own observations. When one political party controls all three spheres of the government such as the Legislative, Executive, and Judicial, we could have a power for good or for bad.
For those who want to accuse me of being a Republican, I am a Libertarian. I consider the idea of ANY Party [Republican, Democratic, or Independent] controlling the Executive, Legislative, and Judicial part of the Federal Government as a blueprint for dictatorship. I have said this when Bush was President and the Republicans were in absolute control.
I would not mind a comment which could be designed to enlighten me. I am very afraid because I believe in freedom and liberty as well as multiparty politics.
On the corner of SW 27th Avenue and SW 8th Street, the Obama Campaign Office is celebrating the possibility of a victory. I am hearing the party since I live about five blocks from the Obama Campaign Headquarters in Miami, Florida.
