The United States election is in 4 weeks.  The candidates are democrat senator Barack Obama and republican senator John McCain.  Depending on the poll, Obama is 4 to 8 points ahead nationally and is ahead in enough states to be very close to winning the 270 electoral college votes needed to win the presidency.

If Obama is elected he should have a democratic majority in the House and Senate. He has made many promises and has run on a platform of change, change, change. How much change can he actually accomplish and will the country unite behind him?

First, even with a democratic majority in congress, if the republicans have 41 senators they can block or delay most legislation so the president will have to compromise with them to get bills passed.

Next, there is a huge debt and deficit which is getting bigger. Obama will not be able to fund all the programs he has promised so he will have to choose which he will try to pass. He cannot have a tax cut and still institute several new programs.

If he is elected, most will give Obama a chance to show what he can do but there will be many who will never support him.  Even now there are many Al Gore and John Kerry supporters who oppose everything president George Bush proposes just because their candidate lost.  If Obama wins, many McCain supporters will feel the same toward him.

There is also the problems of Iraq and Afghanistan. Whatever senator Obama tries to do here, there will be opposition to his plans.  So after the election, the country is very likely to remain as divided as it is today.

I have not yet decided who to vote for.  I am hoping that in the next 4 weeks one candidate can convince me he will actually make a difference.
