NP Rank:
Barbara Boxer 'Call Me Senator,' Michael Walsh, 'Not Ma'am'
Senator Barbara Boxer rebuked Brigadier General Michael Walsh on June 16, telling him to be "call me Senator," rather than "Ma'am." The General Walsh was addressing the senator as "Ma'am" in his responses during a hearing on Capitol Hill, when she interrupted to make her "call me senator" request.
Barbara Boxer immediately dressed down the general officer, saying, “I had a… You know… do me a favor, could you say ‘Senator’ instead of ‘Ma’am’ – it’s just a thing, I worked so hard to get that title so I’d appreciate it, yes thank you.”
According to the U.S. Army protocol guide, it is acceptable to address U.S. Senate members as "Sir", "Ma'am", or "Senator".
Boxer has had conflict with the U.S. military in the past, first through involvement in anti-Vietnam war protests, and more recently in 2007 with General David Petraeus.

One does not "earn" a Senate seat.
One is entrusted with a Senate seat.
Or... at the very least, one buys their Senate seat.
God, I hate leash-snappers. I despise people who have power and can't resist the urge to weild it openly on unsuspecting "common folk."

Did she in turn address the General by his title of "General"? No.
This person has issues.

Ms Boxer should leave her personal feelings in a drawer rather than wear them on a sleeve. As a Senator she represents all of the people in her state. Last I heard there were a few 1000 Marines in her jurisdiction.
So Ma'am please show some respect for those you ship off to defend you. I'm sure the Brigadier-General worked long and hard to get his title too and he probably earned it.

What a disgrace. This just shows how Californians think when they elect such a bitch. Berating the uniform that defends her right to sit on a US Congressional panel is ridiculous, She should kiss the ass of every serviceman she sees for defending her. What an absolute bitch.

I agree with you totally.

In addition, Chris Matthews said this on his June 18 program: "I guess the question is this: Had he said "sir" to a male senator, would that senator be correct in correcting the general? There is a history, however, and let us not forget, of male-female condescension in the U.S. Senate. Just recall the Anita Hill testimony of not too long ago. That just might encourage a woman senator to insist on the title, senator. That being said, an Army spokesman later today says "sir, ma'am, or senator" are all deemed appropriate under the protocol when addressing a U.S. Senator. That's their story.”
So the General is clearly guilty of male-female condescension, Mr. Matthews? Maybe you should do what I did and actually research the story before commenting. I checked out more of the hearing at http://epw.senate.gov/public/index.cfm?FuseAction=Hearings.Choose&Hearing_id=c7026be1-802a-23ad-4fa3-4c8ed0b6d074. Was the General treating her Highness differently and more deferentially than the other senators? I randomly started at about 46.00 and ended around 1.09.00. In that time period Gen. Walsh addressed Sen. Vitter as "sir" 14 times and as "Senator" twice; he addressed Sen. Landrieu as "ma'am" 6 times and as "Senator" twice (and once as "sir" which he quickly corrected to "ma'am"). Neither Sens. Vitter nor Landrieu apparently had a problem with the polite and respectful way they were addressed – even though they had ‘earned’ the same title as her Royal Senatorness. The only thing Boxer and her blind lackey Matthews have earned is my sincere contempt.at 18:46 on June 18th, 2009
A US Senator is a servant of the people-no more and no less. Senate membership is a position that is entrusted to an individual; it is not earned. Senator Boxer is a former protester of military involvement in Vietnam and her attitude is showing.

That's ok General, she won't be a "Senator" next year!

Here's the email I sent this woman....stop commenting here and send her one yourself...
Dear Senator,
How disappointed I was by the video of your unnecessary comment to Brigadier General Michael Walsh in regards to him addressing you as maam. If you truly wish to be addressed as senator, there certainly was a more appropriate way to respond to Brig. General Walsh. Please remember that you do serve and represent the people and that Brig. General Walsh was respectfully responding to your question and did not deserve a lesson from you. After all, didn't the people of this country fight against the need to bow down to royalty like yourself about 200 years ago?
Get a clue maam...I'm sorry senator....

The actions of the, in my opinion, foul putrid disgusting Boxer broad towards that military man is one of many reasons I concluded that the USA demands the enactment of the Females as Property Movement.
That, to me, daffy dizzy Boxer broad is unworthy of even kissing the soles of any military persons', either male OR female, boots.
The disgust I feel towards the Boxer broad are also tied into my anger at the ongoing class war within the USA.
Surely, again just my opinion, that Boxer wench is truly an enemy of the vast majority of Americans since she is either a part of the USA elite class and/or is a lackey of that elite class.
Too bad we can't slap a privates' stripes on Boxers shoulders and ship her off to the front lines in Afghanistan.
The Females as Property Movement knows how to handle mouthy disrespectful dames such as that Boxer thing. A few months at the county unowned female work farm would straighten her out.

Please refrain from personal or discrimination-based attacks on NowPublic. One person saying something possibly disingenuous does not warrant attacking and demeaning the entire female gender, nor does it warrant a reason-less, belittling attack on her gender as opposed to her actual words. See NowPublic Code of Conduct.

Boxer needs to go. What a twit.

He too has worked hard for his position, if not harder. When Boxer interrupted him with her request, he should have said, "Senator, could you please address me as Brigadier General, I have earned that as well". If we are going to be professional, then let us all be professional".It is part of the Military customs, and courtesies to refer to women as ma'am, and men as sir. Once again customs, traditons and values are so easily swept by the wayside. Now THIS IRISH GIRL would have replied "I'll call you something, but it wouldn't be M'am or Senator"!!!!!!!!!Maybe I'd do a Letterman---I'd have called her a slutty flight attendant. Apparently that's perfectly acceptable.

She should focus more on the topic rather than the way she wanted to be addressed. I'm sure the General has more time serving this country than her. I can tell, she has no idea of military protocol.

Ms Boxer should be ashamed of herself! Total lack of nobility, absolutely no manners, her parents must be so humiliated at her lack of respect to the people who protect us with their lives. She's a disgrace to the Senate, the country and the State of California. If she had served in the military she might have made sergeant with such a "bossy" demeanor, but I doubt any thinking military officer would have promoted her any further with such a self-important attitude. She says she worked "so hard" to become a Senator...she conveniently forgot that she had to get elected (chosen) by the people. She has conveniently forgotten that all politicians get elected by talking constantly, promising everything, manipulating others & brow beating people to contribute campaign monies. That's hard work but it doesn't warrant any respect. Serving in the Military commands respect. I can't see Ms Boxer standing in front of anyone to protect them from bodily harm and I definitely don't see her able to lead, command or plan a successful campaign against an enemy. Such an important person as she from a State that is bankrupt because of its leadership ...how can she even imagine she's above being called "ma'am" which is simply a standard military salutation in use for centuries?

She's just like the guy in Ferris Bueller's Day Off; "Call Me Sir, Goddammit!"

Jody,
I was enjoying the well-communicated outrage expressed by most of the other posters, then I came across yours. Your unintelligent, juvenile and vile method of expressing yourself helps give conservatives (like myself) a bad name. If you can't speak with at least a minimum level of maturity and reason, it would be a very good idea for you to say nothing at all.

We teach our child to say “yes ma'am” and “yes sir” because saying "ma'am" and “sir” is a polite and respectful way of addressing others here in US and is obviously not taught on "Planet Crazy" where Barbara Boxer lives. She does NOT DESERVE to be called SENATOR and is too stupid to know that General Walsh was following military protocol, which advises officers to use "sir" or "ma'am" when addressing anyone ‘higher’ than them on the chain of command, and she is FAR TOO STUPID to know that he WAS addressing her in a manner that showed respect and honor. The ONLY thing she deserves to be called is "POND SCUM".
Boxer is a sick demented idiot moron and shows her stupidity every time she opens her moronic mouth. Californians should be ashamed that they ever elected her as a Senator because she wreaks disaster with everything she does. Boxer, please, just SHUT UP and DON’T have a nice day.at 04:30 on June 22nd, 2009
Barbara Boxer: Senator and out ou touch, ungrateful (for our military), BITCH
at 02:11 on June 23rd, 2009
Mrs. Boxer, needs not only to apologize to the General but to every military member, every military veteran who has ever served. It is acceptable for military members to address even the President by the term Sir, so where does she get off objecting?
Do you guess if I was to ever meet her I could demand that she call me Chief Petty Officer Retired?at 19:20 on June 27th, 2009
This tired stupid cunt needs to go now. It is embarrassing to be from California. I do not care for Feinstein either, but I do have respect for her as a Senator. The only thing Boxer has earned has been on her knees. Her position was bought as most political hacks in this country. It is now time to THIN THE HERD.

I already wrote in and gave my comment to what she said.My husband spent twenty years in the air force and they were taught to call woman madame. If Barbara Boxer wants respect she should show some! The form of address that the general used is more than acceptable. She has overreacted and, in the process, she humiliated someone who intended no harm. The main problem seems to be that people elected someone like her! She should grow up -- stop worrying about her title and start doing her job. If the Senate concentrated less on vacations and idiocy like this maybe they would have time to concentrate on what they are paid (very well paid!) to do. Worry about social security and other important issues instead of something so assinine!
