Barry George cleared of Dando murder
Barry George accused of murdering Jill Dando in 1999, has been found not guilty in a retrial at the Old Bailey, having spent 8 years in prison. He has always insisted he was innocent. There were doubts over the scientific evidence of the speck of gun residue which convicted him in the first trial. Scotland Yard's homicide said they were disappointed by the verdict, presumably as they will have to start looking for the real killer.
Barry George has been found not guilty of murdering BBC television presenter Jill Dando outside her London home.
Mr George, 48, of Fulham, west London, denied shooting 37-year-old Miss Dando on her doorstep on 26 April 1999.
He was retried at the Old Bailey, having first been convicted in 2001. Forensic evidence of gunshot residue had been ruled inadmissible.

A fascinating end to a story which has, unbelievably, been going on for 9 years. I remember the shock that rippled through the BBC newsroom when the news came in that Jill Dando - a household name - had been shot dead.
In addition to the search for the real killer, what's also interesting is what will become of Barry George now that he is presumably a free man. In court, the jury was told that he had a history of complex medical problems as well as a personality disorder. Police also presented evidence that they had found at his home more than 2,000 photographs of women that he had taken.
