Bastile day (Fete National) celebrates the end of the French monarchy in 1789 and the start of modern France. On this day large swathes of the city are cordoned off, as the army and navy prepare for a lengthy parade.

The day began with a military parade which included regiments from across Europe and as Sarkozy, the new French President rode down the Champs Elysee avenue escorted by the French republican guard, he even stopped to shake hands with bystanders, a first for any French president.

What interests me more is that despite the roads being closed, there still seemed to be a taxi rank :p hehe
