Battered women find safety in the US

After more than a decade of legal wrangling over what the official stance should be on foreign women seeking US protection from domestic abuse, the White House has opened the way for battered females to receive asylum. The administration recently submitted a cautiously worded legal brief – regarding the case of a Mexican woman identified only as LR – to an immigration appeals court saying that "It is possible" that LR "and other applicants who have experienced domestic violence could qualify for asylum."

Good news although as noted elsewhere in the piece, this move does not include women who have been victims of genital mutilation. Still, though, it's a start and perhaps the beginning of further and fairer inclusion. That said, the piece also points out that more needs to be done for women already residing in the US who are victims of domestic violence.

While helping to make foreign-born citizens of the world more safe, we should also be working to improve the situation for American women who are suffering brutality at the hands of men they know all too well.

Let's take care of American women first and then worry about the women in other countries.  Let the U. N. step up to the plate and help the women and children of the World that are being tortured and abused by the brutal men of the world.

With the economic situation here we can't be asking our taxpayers to foot the bill for anything outside of the U.S., including the two wars we have going in Iraq and Afganistan.  Which hopefully will be ended asap!
