This weekend is the 231st Anniverary of the Battle of Monmouth, which lead to the British withdrawal from New Jersey, during the American Revolution. It was pariticulary noted for the largest artillary exchange of the war. A little know fact is that nearly 900 men of African decent fought in this battle. The 1st Rhode Regiment Reenactors is here to portray the 1st Rhode Island Regiment of Foot which had 40 soldiers detached fighting in this battle. Reenactors greet and interact with those visiting to their tent, often assuming first person characters as black soldiers, slaves, or free men to discuss and debate the issues confronting people of African decent during the American Revolution - such as whether to fight for the British, who offered freedom to slaves fighting for the Crown whose master was in rebellion, or to fight for the patriot cause, and hope freedom would come. Visitors sometimes join in the proceedings, offering comments.
