Two lanes on the Bay Bridge has been closed after a cable snapped. Bay Bridge is expected to be closed for at least 24 hours as the crew try to repair the snapped cable. A portion of the cable hit 3 cars and injured one person. This took place on the left lane of the upper deck just before Treasure Island. The SIG alert was issued at 5:45 pm.

UPDATE (Oct. 28, 2009): Bay Bridge will be closed indefinitely while Caltrans repair the bridge.

At this point, it is unclear what caused the cable to snap. Today's high wind might have contributed to the accident. A motorist sustained minor injured by broken glass from the car's windshield.

The three left lanes of the bridge — westbound Interstate 80 — are closed indefinitely, authorities said.

People who drove by the cable, said it did not appear anyone was hurt when the cable came down.  It was not immediately clear how long the lanes would be closed, or what, if any, structural effect the snapped cable had on the bridge.
