BC: 3,600 ready to roll in Bike to Work Week
Barry Artiste, Now Public Contributor
British Columbia is gearing up for Bike to Work Week and by the price of gas reaching upwards of $6.00 a gallon, so using your bike is pretty much a given by many who parked their cars and hit the trails on their bikes.
Bike week should be every week, imagine if you will Vancouver as a Canadian Netherlands, where bikes outnumber cars.
I am also going to link this story with Now Public's Contributor Beaulieu, whose recent story on Cycling and bike trails in Europe bring to mind a pastime that should be recaptured considering those concerned with out environment still take the car to the corner store.
Let's hope drivers remember to give cyclists the right of way as they are helping reduce vehicle traffic and helping the environment too boot, on your behalf too if you cannot take your bike to work.
Happy Cycling!!
3,600 ready to roll in Bike to Work WeekAllison Cross, Vancouver SunPublished: Monday, May 26, 2008It's been years since Candace Bonfield even sat on a bicycle, but she plans to embark on a gruelling hour-long climb up Burnaby Mountain every morning this week.
"I live at the base of the mountain. I've been going to the gym a little bit," said Bonfield, who works at Simon Fraser University as a sustainability coordinator. "You know, to get my legs ready."

Barry Artiste, I like this story.
I was watching this TV show (it's not often I watch the TV as it's full of rubbish) but I did watch a programme about how a American couple even drove their car to the mail box, no, not the mailbox five miles away but the one at the very end of their surburban house.
Life is so much slower on a bike, why do we have to be stressed by going fast all the time? There's also the sense of adventure.

Tired of relying on your car just because you have big or heavy stuff to move? A bicycle trailer may be the answer. I built this one myself for under $30, but if you prefer, there are many different kinds you can buy. I love using mine for trips to the grocery store, or bringing home garden supplies from the local nursery.

I went four years without a car and it saved me money and kept me
healthy. Unfortunately over the last 5 years I have turned into a fat,
middle aged guy. Pity really.
But based on what emilysaurus said here about bike trailers, those of us who are not handy can still find a way for a bike to help us move the truly hefty stuff.
There's a coffee house in Minneapolis that uses their trailers to make all their bulk coffee deliveries in town and they swear by them.

We bought a couple of Electra Townies with our Economic Stimulus Checks. Gas is going to go even higher in the next few years, so we will be biking it all we can. Crazy times.

Hey everyone thanks for the comments and photos everyone, hopefully this will catch one, a city of bikes would be nice. Though we have a electric Skytrain transit system that runs through the lower mainland, nothing like the open air of a cycle, especially along the seawall.

Thanks Cynthia, I sent an email to City Hall as I thought Hey,you know they should have a Fundraising Bicycle Drive for Burma and China Relief, that would go a long way, as well as take car off the road, even if temporarily.

Our city has over 300 km. of bike path all over the Island of Montreal. This photo is an example of scenic areas available to bikers and those who roller-blade.

I noticed in North America the use of bicycle for enjoyment, transportation or sport is catching with the rest of the world.

Don't forget that Bike to work week will be topped off with a Critical Mass on Friday! It's usually the busiest one of the year. I invite everyone to join for the passion and comraderie that people have for the mish-mash of reasons for CM.
at 20:59 on May 26th, 2008
I am a cyclist and a driver. I support Bike to Work Week but not Critical Mass. Being pro-bike is great but Critical Mass is about inconveniencing drivers and frankly it is more than a little juvenile. For people like me it makes cyclists look bad.
at 22:06 on May 26th, 2008
Fair enough. CM does have it's various elements, but it has a very powerful effect on the community at large. Whether it's effects are good or bad is up for debate. It is without official sanction nor a set/predictable route and that is both it's beauty and it's largest criticism. As you mention though, it's possible to be a supporter of biking and anti-CM. On the other hand, it's also possible to be a non-rider and a supporter of CM. Those interested in knowing more can read the wiki article at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Critical_Mass .

I was in Paris a few days ago, and noticed that many people were riding bikes everywhere, which was a pleasant surprise coming from New York. I shot this image outside of a boutique on the place des vosges.

In the Netherlands, this sign indicates a bike path (Dutch: fietspad). Bike paths are abundant in the Netherlands. Most lead you through beautiful locations, where the beauty of nature is seen as far as the eye can see and where no roads could possibly take you.

Don't let your bike get old and rusty like this one. Bikes are not for roof art they should be on the roads and trails. Come on out and support Bike to Work Week and be sure to register your commuter hours on the BTWW webpage.

as we know car often cause more pollution which one of the global warming causes, by using bicycle we are not only save the world but we also can keep out from the traffic jam + many more benefit such as, health, efficient , money , and many more , so why not use bicycle ? you might think that one person couldn't do anything , but with joining others we can be an impact :) .....

That photo was taken in seventy something, aboard of a car, in São Paulo, Brazil. At this time I use to carry day and night a Leica M3 , and photographing all kind of people. Now I1m scanning the negatives and publish in Flickr and others sites. My flickr: http://www.flickr.com/photos/42042512@N00/

A sunny day in May and I was on my way to visit one of the bookstores at the Spui in the city of Amsterdam. As always when I'm walking in the city I had my camera with me and then I saw the woman carrying a plant with her bike. I think she was on her way home en just came from the flowermarket on the Singel, which is quite nearby the Spui.
That's the story...
