Golden Ears Bridge - the bridge that is being built between Surrey and Maple Ridge / Pitt Meadows - is going to have something no other bridge has in BC when it opens next summer.

It's going to have a suicide barrier.

A construction worker working on the bridge, told NowPublic that it will be a fence on the outside of the bridge that will be really difficult to climb and will be a smooth surface that will make it difficult to scale.

There are currently no other suicide barriers on any bridge in BC, making them a target for people who want to end their lives.

No doubt the province is hoping this added structure will help deter people from taking this drastic measure.

amyjudd, I like this story. It's good stuff. I think this topic deserves a lot of attention, as such a simple measure can prevent a lot of tragedies.

amyjudd, I like this story. It's good stuff. its great to see them take suicide into the factor while creating this bridge. Anything to help save lives is a good idea.

amyjudd, I like this story. It's good stuff. I'm not sure how many suicide attempts are made on bridges but it's a good preventative measure.

amyjudd, I like this story. It's good stuff.  rpshen, there are more Bridge jumpers every couple of months in BC than you can imagine.

A Barrier is a great idea, but anyone bent on killing themselves can find any other bridge non barriered to jump off of, of course they could just walk out in front of traffic. Failing that, they could sit down and listen to a Gordon Campbell speech, in which this case, Death is Quite Painful.

Barry, Yeah you turn around and run into traffic.  Jumpping off a bridge is a lousy way to die.  If it is early fall or winter, if hitting the water doesn't kill you, which is preferrable to actually living to drowned.  Feels like thousands of knives stuck in your body until hypothermia takes over.

True, life has to be pretty desperate for one to end it.

If it really deters people from suicide jumping off the bridge then it will be a good thing to install all the bridges in BC with barriers. Just a thought.

No idea what BC is standing for. May be this is news for BC but in the Netherlands this is common and old stuff.

amyjudd, I like this story. It's good stuff.  It seems like a good idea.  The current favorite for suicide seems to be the old Patullo Bridge.  When they close that one for a jumper, the drivers in rush hour traffic get pushed a little closer too.
