"Minister responsible for auto insurance gets 4-month suspension"

By Doug Ward, Vancouver Sun, April 25, 2009

Solicitor-General John van Dongen, the minister who has been responsible for car insurance in B.C., has had his driver's licence suspended for four months after racking up too many speeding tickets.

Van Dongen was informed of the suspension on April 16 and waited until Thursday -- a week later -- to inform Premier Gordon Campbell about the penalty and request that responsibility for the Office of the Superintendent of Motor Vehicles and ICBC be removed from his ministry.

Campbell has reassigned responsibility for those two agencies to Iain Black, minister of Labour and Citizens' Services.

Van Dongen said Friday that "in retrospect" he should have told Campbell earlier. The minister said he spent several days considering whether to appeal the suspension while he was busy campaigning for re-election in Abbotsford South before telling the premier.
