Police - many of whom were evidently inexperienced - were deployed after the army pulled back from surrounding the BDR compound. Later, at least eight tanks were deployed by the army onto the main streets as the mutiny by the Bangladeshi paramilitary border guards, the Bangladesh Rifles (BDR), continued into its second day. Despite an earlier agreement made following talks with the prime minster, the BDR refused to surrender its arms until the army had completely left the area near the BDR headquarters in Dhanmondi, Dhaka, and pulled out of BDR camps country-wide.
