Bear Mauling News – More bears in Virginia than in past 400 years
I didn't know that
In 1611 Native Americans were going about their business in Virginia much the way James Michener described in his book, Chesapeake. Bears were commonplace in the woods and provided a nice coat if you could kill a bear. Eating bear isn’t that pleasant because the meat is oily. Then again, oil rendered from cooking bear can be used to fuel a lamp. Did Native Americans have such lamps? We know they did in California.

“Black bears are becoming an increasingly common sight in Virginia—bears now live in almost every county! We are fortunate to have a healthy and sustainable population of these animals in the Commonwealth. But even as our black bear population grows and expands, at the same time, residential areas are encroaching into the forested lands and habitats used by bears and other wildlife, thus increasing the chances for bear/human interaction or conflicts. Let's all do our part to help manage black bears by watching this video and learning how to live with bears in Virginia.”

We need more predators?

YJ, you're right; WE (humans) do need more predators. :) As to bears, not many things hunt them just humans and bigger bears. Cougars will on occasion take down a young one but that is about it. Some bears yield, when rendered properly, an exceptionally fine, light oil. That depends alot on what the bear has eaten. Use to use it on my smooth rifle and patching.
