Beijing cuts cars by half as Olympics near
A World Bank study found China is home to 16 of the 20 worst cities for air quality. Three-quarters of the water flowing through urban areas is unsuitable for drinking or fishing.
International Olympic Committee president Jacques Rogge has repeatedly warned that outdoor endurance events lasting more than an hour will be postponed if the air quality is poor.
Beijing started its drastic traffic control plan Sunday in a last-minute push to clear the capital's pollution-choked skies in time for the August Olympics.
Under the two-month plan, half of Beijing's 3.3 million cars will be removed from city streets on alternate days, depending on whether the license plate ends in an odd or even number.
Skies were relatively clear Sunday and traffic was light. But the real test will come when the work week begins.
In a highly stage-managed Olympics aimed at showing off the rising power of the 21st century, no challenge is greater than producing crystalline air for 10,500 of the world's greatest athletes.
"Pea-soup air at the opening ceremony would be their worst nightmare," said Victor Cha, director of Asian Studies at Georgetown University.
Striking venues and $40 billion spent to improve infrastructure cannot mask Beijing's dirty air.

Thanks Barry for flag, China still on escape line for air water quality. But failures to join the low C02 world community are obvious. The Diesel quality for the trucks and buses can not be measuered in ppm it's just smoking quality not even justifying to heat with it. The pollution travelling over miles in the air to the Californian coast, verified one year ago by a private US Plane. Some say China may be hit first in 5 years by the drinking water crisis, having destroyed practically all rivers. Hope this Olympic games bring some awareness for quality of Life for all of us.
