Massimo Tartiglia, the man who attacked Italy's Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi last Sunday, apologized to the P.M. through his lawyers today, saying the attack was a "superficial, cowardly and inconsiderate act."

"I don't recognise myself," Tartaglia, who is reported to have a history of mental illness, said.

Berlusconi was attacked with a replica of Milan's Duomo cathedral during a rally in Milan. The attack caught Berlusconi by surprise, and the 73-year-old P.M. was visibly shaken. Berlusconi's face was bloodied, his nose was broken and two teeth were knocked out. The P.M. is still staying in hospital and has trouble eating. It is expected Italy's leader will take up to three weeks to heal. Berlusconi's doctors were concerned over the P.M.'s morale, saying Berlusconi was emotionally battered.

Meanwhile, Internet users around the world are actively discussing the incident. And, the popular social networking site Facebook is no exception. But, some of the comments made about the incident will get filtered should any threatening content come through, said Facebook.

“Promoting violence, or posting threatening content, is not permitted on Facebook,” the social-networking site said. “We will take quick action to respond to reports, and remove any content reported to us that makes direct threats against an individual.”
