Police stations were attacked in the Tivoli Gardens area A state of emergency has been imposed in parts of Kingston after weekend unrest following protests by supporters of alleged drug lord Christopher "Dudus" Coke.
State of Emergency in Tivoli
Jamaica's Prime Minister Bruce Golding has denounced unrest in the capital city Kingston as a "calculated assault on the authority of the state".
He vowed that criminals would not triumph, after supporters of an alleged druglord took to the streets to stop him from being arrested.
One police station has been set on fire and two others shot at by suspected supporters of Mr Coke.
The authorities have declared a state of emergency in parts of Kingston.
The trouble began late last week when the authorities announced they would arrest and extradite Mr Coke to the US.
His supporters set up barricades and said they would fight to protect him.
The BBC's Nick Davis in Montego Bay says the capital now represents a city under siege.
Troops and police have come under fire, and smoke is rising from the burning police station.
Mr Golding said security forces would be "moving swiftly to bring the current situation under control".
"Criminal elements bent on violence and mayhem will be detained," he said in a televised address.
"What is taking place is a calculated assault on the authority of the state that cannot be tolerated, and will not be allowed to continue."
A state of emergency allowing police to conduct searches without a warrant and restrict movement was put in place in West Kingston and St Andrews districts, where the violence broke out.
The government said the measures would be in place for at least a month.
The areas are a stronghold of support for Mr Coke, 41, who says he is a community leader.
Our correspondent says Mr Coke's supporters see him as a man who is fulfilling a role that the government does not.
He looks after them and gives them money when they are out of work, and because of that he has a huge amount of support in the area.
Police have called for his surrender and have described the barricades surrounding his area a sign of "cowardice", the Associated Press news agency reported.
Jamaican PM: "an assault on the authority of this state"
The US Justice Department says Mr Coke is one of the world's most dangerous drug barons. He is accused of leading a gang called the Shower Posse - owing to the volume of bullets used in shootings - and operating an international smuggling network.
He faces a life sentence if he is convicted on charges filed against him in New York.
The gang has also been blamed for numerous murders in Jamaica and the US.
Prime Minister Golding said earlier this week that he was prepared to send Mr Coke to the US on drugs and weapons trafficking charges.
The decision reversed nine months of opposition to his extradition.
Mr Golding had argued that the evidence against Mr Coke was obtained illegally by intercepting mobile telephone calls.
But he changed his mind in the face of growing public discontent, and questions about his possible ties to Mr Coke.
He apologised to the nation and admitted he had mishandled the case.
Jamaica's political history is intertwined with the street gangs that the two main parties helped organize — and some say armed — in Kingston's poor neighborhoods in the 1970s and '80s. The gangs controlled the streets and intimidated voters at election time. In recent years political violence has waned, and many of the killings in Kingston now are blamed on the active drug and extortion trade.
The US and UK have warned travellers about possible violence and disorder in Kingston because of the situation.
Bermuda is turning into a criminal state enterprise, under Ewart Brown & PLP,plans to shut down the media,to force gambling , and their soft policy on crime.
Critics suggest a payoff and collusion from Bermuda's drug dealers to protect Ewart Brown & PLP, as long as their politically appointed judges and DPP continue to help the criminals avoid justice & punishment
Media Council Act to crush freedom of the press
This is the plan of the PLP ,under thief in charge, "we had to deceive you" Ewart Brown, mimicking his cousins in Jamaica, where politicians protect the drug cartels and criminal gangs,in return for cash and thugs to help them win elections.
Cut from the same caribbean cloth as carpetbagger Ewart Brown, Prime Minister Golding had denied for months that he had sanctioned an American law firm to lobby against Christopher "Dudus" Coke being sent for trial in the US.
But he changed his mind in the face of growing public discontent, calls for his removal and questions about his possible ties to Mr Coke.
He apologised to the nation on TV last week
It's also said to be in control of West Kingston, Prime Minister Golding's constituency. Mr Coke is regarded by Washington as one of the world's most wanted drug kingpins.
His gang, the Shower Posse, is said to be responsible for more than 1400 murders in the US.

A visiting couple have spoken of the terrifying moment they were attacked by a crazed knifeman in their hotel room.
They were woken in the middle of the night to find the masked man at the end of their bed, waving a blade and demanded money.
Yesterday Peter and Barbara — who are both doctors but asked only to be referred to by their first names for personal safety reasons — revealed the full horror of their experience.
Peter told the Sun he thought he was going to die after he was repeatedly stabbed during the attack.
His wife described how she desperately ran to raise the alarm after the raider knocked her temporarily unconscious.
The couple, who were staying at the Grotto Bay Beach Resort, had arrived in Bermuda last Friday for a holiday and to take part in the Round the Sound Swim.
They had gone to bed on Saturday night hoping to get a good night’s sleep in preparation for the race.
But they were woken at 4:30am.
Peter, 61, said: “I heard this terrible sound and jumped straight out of bed.
“I saw this man standing at the end of our bed. I started yelling and screaming .
“I could see the blade in his hand – it was shining.
“The man was shouting at us — he wanted our money and passports — but I couldn’t really understand him because he had a strange accent.
“He came at me and stabbed me in the side of the leg — then he went for me again.
“It was like he was on drugs or something — he was excited and was running all over the place.”
Barbara, 60, ran to the phone to call for help.
But she was hit over the head with a blunt object by the intruder and knocked unconscious.
When she came around again the knifeman was still in the room, grappling with her husband.
She ran out the door and into the night to get help.
She said: “I have never run that fast in my life.
“My head was bleeding but I had to get out and get help.
“When I got to the office I started shouting at them to get help and call the police — I think they were completely stunned to see me in that state.”
Meanwhile the raider had locked Peter in the hotel room and continued to demand his money and the couple’s passports.
“He came at me with the knife again and stabbed me deep in my leg.
“There was blood everywhere but I could not feel any pain. He went to the drawers to look through them again and then came back at me.
“He held the knife high and came down with it on my chest. But the blade hit my sternum and did not penetrate.”
While the intruder continued to look through the couple’s belongings, Peter made a bid for freedom and bolted out the door.
He was covered in blood when he arrived at the hotel office.
“I was in shock,” he said. “I really thought the knife had gone through one of my arteries — I was bleeding so much I thought that that was it for me. I wasn’t sure I would survive.”
The couple, who live in New Jersey, were rushed to hospital where Peter underwent emergency surgery for the deep stab wound to his leg. He also received stitches for his other injuries to his chest and leg.
He remained in hospital until Monday.
Barbara also had stitches to a deep cut to the back of her head. She was released from hospital on Sunday.
She said: “The whole experience was worse than a horror movie and worse than anything we have gone through before.
“I found it hard spending the Saturday night on my own. I had the lights on and the TV on. I checked all the locks were locked.
