Don’t look back

It was a “dumb” move to attack Iraq. It was also illegal and based on manipulation by the Bush administration. The war was fought at an extremely high price in dollars and soldiers. There is no return on cost, though America compounded and extended its pursuit of terrorists.

A new enemy of America is in charge. It remains to be seen where the Iraqi government finds new alliances. Most likely, it will align with its old enemy, Iran.

We have a similar circumstance in Afghanistan. The mission was clearer there, though the outcome may be no different except we have reduced the effectiveness of terrorists. Have we shifted the hatred for America from disparate terrorists to formal governments? What does that mean? What are the consequences?

This scenario will play out for years. One mitigating development is that freedom may be breaking out in the region where people have greater control. Depending on which people gain the upper hand, some outcomes may be favorable.

Did the outbreaks of freedom have anything to do with Americans in Iraq and Afghanistan?

“Iraq PM says failed talks on immunity for US soldiers led to full American military withdrawal

By Associated Press, Updated: Saturday, October 22, 9:03 AM

BAGHDAD — Iraq’s prime minister said Saturday that U.S. troops are leaving Iraq after nearly nine years of war because Baghdad rejected American demands that any U.S. military forces to stay would have to be shielded from prosecution or lawsuits.

The comments by Nouri al-Maliki, a Shiite, made clear that it was Iraq who refused to let the U.S. military remain under the Americans’ terms.

A day earlier, President Barack Obama had hailed the troops’ withdrawal as the result of his commitment — promised shortly after taking office in 2009 — to end the war that he once described as “dumb.”

“When the Americans asked for immunity, the Iraqi side answered that it was not possible,” al-Maliki told reporters in Baghdad. “The discussions over the number of trainers and the place of training stopped. Now that the issue of immunity was decided and that no immunity to be given, the withdrawal has started.””

Iraq would surely ally with Iran and it should be to strengthen the region and strengthen the democracy in the region.

Fledgling government of Iraq has yet to prove its viability as a government, and the government of Iran is a theocracy commingling elements of democracy, neither of which are likely to "strengthen deomocracy" in the region, IMO.
