Flight Attendant Beverly McCurley Says She Took a 13-Month-Old Baby Girl Away From Mother Lee Ann Cid After She Saw Her Slap Her Baby

A Southwest flight from Dallas to Albuquerque was disrupted on Monday when flight attendant Beverly McCurley saw Lee Ann Cid slap her baby daughter on the face. Ms. McCurley then took the baby away during the flight and notified the police who were waiting to greet the flight when it arrived.

According to Yahoo News, Ms. Cid said she slapped her baby because the  child kicked her, but some passengers were outraged and complained to the airline staff.

An ABC News report stated that Ms. McCurley said that the mother appeared agitated with the child and the husband was yelling at his wife to 'shut the baby up'.

No charges were filed in the case, but it did raise the issue of who should intervene in child discipline from their parents in a public place. Ms. McCurley apparently told the police that the baby also had a black eye, but the parents said that came from a dog bite.

β€œI think it was a solid move [on] the part of the flight attendant to take custody of the child,” said Albuquerque International Sunport police chief Marshall Katz. β€œIt neutralized the situation. It calmed everybody down.”

Ms. McCurley did return the baby to the parents before the plane landed, and Southwest has not commented on the matter.
