Bibles sent to Afghanistan burnt by US military

KABUL, Afghanistan, May 20 (UPI) -- Unsolicited Bibles a U.S. church sent to Afghanistan were confiscated and burned by the military, a Defense Department spokesman said.
Lt. Col. Mark Wright said the Bibles printed in the two most common Afghan languages were seized on arrival at Bagram Air Base because U.S. military rules forbid troops from proselytizing.
The Bibles were written in the languages Pashto and Dari.
The decision came to light recently, after the Al Jazeera English network aired video of a group prayer service and chapel sermon that a reporter said suggested U.S. troops were being encouraged to spread Christianity.
The military denied that earlier this month, saying much in the video was taken out of context.
Col. Gregory Julian said "This was irresponsible and dangerous journalism sensationalizing year-old footage of a religious service for U.S. soldiers on a U.S. base and inferring that troops are evangelizing to Afghans."

Hmmmm how did Al Jazeera find out about the bible shipment? At a guess I would say its very possible that the bibles were not seized on arrival at Bagram Air Base. But that they had already been distributed and seized before more damage could be done. lol

I wondered too about that, but Al-Jazeera may have had some help from those in Afghanistan.
But personally, burning sacred texts/books of a religion to me is just not right.
