“Big Dog” McCain Picks "Husky" To Run On Republican Ticket

Let’s review the headlines from Google this morning:

Russia: G7 Condemnation over Georgia Shows 'Bias'

Zimbabwe poll crisis talks resume

Oil Rises in New York as Gustav Threatens US Gulf Platforms

Thai protesters, police scuffle as turmoil escalates

Ready for the fight: Obama blasts McCain, details vision for change

Texas Leads US In Number Of Uninsured Residents

… and the Senior Senator from Arizona, John McCain, from the “Nutter Center” (no, we did not make this up) decides on a cynical and calculating choice for Vice-President a standing 18 month Governor from Alaska.

Sara Palin, a woman in her mid-forties with minimal international experience and name recognition and former Mayor of Wasilla, Alaska, is a cynical pick in that, if one were going to pick the strongest replacement for himself - if he, John McCain were to die or become disabled in office … by all standards, in the Republican Party, that person would be Mitt Romney.

The cynical case for Governor Sara Palin:

Well, she is a women – given the disrespect and pass-over by Barack Obama for Vice President Hillary Clinton, and her 18 million voters, received from the Democrat Party over these last couple of months McCain believes he could pick up conservative Democrat support.

Palin is for drilling and developing our access to oil – She served as Ethics Commissioner of the Alaska Oil and Gas Conservation Commission.

High approval ratings – In July 2007, Palin had an approval rating often in the 90s. A poll published by Hays Research on July 28, 2008 showed Palin's approval rating at 80%. /// Fred Barnes (Editor of The Weekly Standard) praised Palin as a "politician of eye-popping integrity" and referred to her rise as "a great (and rare) story of how adherence to principle—especially to transparency and accountability in government—can produce political success."

Palin is pro-life – This would be consistent with John McCain’s political record of supporting the rights of the unborn.

This excerpted and edited from Wikipedia -

On August 29, 2008, Fox News Channel's Fox & Friends reported that Palin's family departed hastily from Anchorage, Alaska, aboard a Gulfstream jet that landed near Dayton, Ohio, site of McCain's planned vice presidential announcement. They cited the website Change&Experience.com, which also had correctly leaked travel details for Senator Joseph Biden to Springfield, Illinois, for Barack Obama's announcement. [62]. The report cited two men, a woman and two teenage boys, were seen departing the plane, in "the most secretive flight we have ever had" at this particular airport.

Palin has been rumored as a candidate for the vice-presidency with Republican presumptive nominee Senator John McCain in the 2008 election.[55][56] Due to her gender, youth, background in government reform, pro-life stance, fiscal and social conservatism, and an approval rating in Alaska generally in the range of 80 to 90 percent, Palin could become the second female vice-presidential nominee of a major party, following Geraldine Ferraro as Democratic nominee in 1984. Palin is supported by a community of online groups.[57][57][58][59][60][61]

On the face, this pick would appear to be cynical but could actually become a swing for the fences to counteract the celebrity of Barack Obama and lack of executive experience that the nominees for the Democrat Party actually has - THAT WOULD BE NONE.

Oh, and did anyone happen to notice that one of the issues that is always on the mind of any Alaskan Politician - Russian Politics?!

I've never heard of her.  Granted, a good-looking woman might be considered just the thing to balance

Oh, puh-leeeze. A "good looking woman" is simply...a sexist comment.

He chose Palin because of her accomplishments, guts, and character.

But, if we're going to go superficial and sexist, too bad the Democrats couldn't come up with a good-looking guy.    ;}

Yes, but you gotta’ admit the ‘sex card’ most likely played a little part in McCain’s decision. A decision he waited to announce after the Democratic National Convention.

PEP,

I am sure he chose her for all those reasons, and the fact that he chose a woman will play well to the millions of disenfranchised Democratic feminists who are still smarting because Ms. Clinton was kicked to the curb.  Like it or not sex is a card that is being played in this election, and in a culture that worships good looks her being attractive certainly won't hurt.

Not sexist, just politically pragmatic.

I think the gender card will be talked a lot about but I just don't see many women voting for a candidate just because they share the same anatomy. Sure, it might make a difference for some but I don't think it's going to swing the female vote dramatically one way or the other. And if looks mattered then Romney would be the republican's pick and Edwards would have been the democrat's pick back in '04.

You have now.  Looks like Mayor Jim Whittaker backed the wrong Party.

Listening to her acceptance talk in Dayton now.  Speaks well.

Edmund Jenks, thanks for getting this story out so quickly. It will now show up on the home page for four hours. If new developments justify it, I'll renew this flag for another cycle.

Good catch Ed!

That flag is very generous of you, BigT, as closely as you follow politics--and right on! I've never seen you flag your own stuff, and I want you to know how much I admire that and your consistent record in not using your power to promote yourself. Good stuff on you, too!

Hey, Ed, I'm removing this now because I think pretty much everyone knows about it at this point. Great job in getting it up so quickly! Thanks buddy!

Edmund Jenks, I like this story. It's good stuff. Fast, too! There I was, chatting with a friend and kazzam! McCain goes for the long odds runner!

So the GOP is going for the women's vote and the vote that's slightly to the left of center on some issues. Interesting.

Funny, I just realized that McCain is criticized for being too old and too long an insider in big politics. But Obama filled out his ticket with...ta da! An old white guy who's an insider in politics!      ;}

Looks like the choice for real change is: Palin. Obama had his chance to offer change to the women of America and just couldn't manage to do it, given his ego.

So McCain and the Republicans do. A woman VP, and one with guts, too. Now, that's a choice that offers change!

Edmund Jenks, I like this story. It's good stuff.

MSNBC is having many woman come on in Gov and criticize the pick of a Palin.  Just shows you that the beltway really isn't pro woman, they are pro-liberal woman.  Reminds me when Hillary didn't stand up for the woman that had been abused by her husband.

Just think.......IF America were to vote in the Republicans again (big IF) with 'Old Guy McCain', we may see a Woman President after all.

Great introduction and opening speech - Palin proved that she is definately NOT a part of the sisterhood of the traveling pantsuit!

What an incredibly savvy choice!  I have to begrudgingly give McCain political kudos for this move.  Whereas I used to think the election would be just an Obama coronation, it looks like you have a real honest to goodness dogfight coming up!

Kind of like Davy Crockett or  Andy Jackson coming out of the frontier wilderness to get the job done in Washington.

Her speech was fantastic and hit every point well.  The bridge to no where, Palin sent that money back.  The Dems keep bringing it up, but The project was canceled early this year last.

Some of the Classy parts were honoring the first female vp.  and Clinton.  She then framed the 18 million cracks in the glass ceiling as an opportunity to break through.  The talking heads are already coming out about her lack of expeirnce.  Interesting that at the DNC exp was down played.  One must have the right qualities and Obama has them they said. Today, she has no expeience and is in the pocket of Big Oil.  Interesting, is that she has gone after big oil.

I am confident like Moonwolf stated, we have a real race
