Options abound as wireless auction kicks offDavid George-Cosh, Canwest News ServicePublished: Tuesday, May 27, 2008With one hand holding a pricey cellphone bill and another tied to a three-year contact, Canadians could soon be getting some relief as Industry Canada's wireless spectrum auction begins Tuesday.
Triggered by expensive data rates and stagnant competition, the door has been opened wide for Shaw Communications Inc., Manitoba Telecom Services Inc., Quebecor Inc., Globalive Communications Corp. and Data and Audio-Visual Enterprises (DAVE)Wireless to emerge as the country's new national wireless operators.
Industry Canada has set aside 40 megahertz, out of a total 105, for a new entrant to compete against established carriers - Rogers Communications Inc., Telus Corp. and BCE Inc.
The auction is expected to raise about $1.5 billion for the federal government. It is expected to close by the end of June.
Canadians will soon be treated to faster networks, a larger selection of handsets and much more affordable pricing structures that could cut in half the average cost of owning a cellphone from$60 a month, said industry consultant Mark Goldberg.
