Bill and Penny's Excellent Adventures
As our economy has tumbled we've been challenged to follow our dreams, keep doing what we do best, and help others as best we can. We have chosen to continue a project started two years ago, introducing Gwich'in Indians of Arctic Village, Alaska to gardening. Why gardening? Health issues have arisen due to a largely meat diet and purchasing other food is costly as it is all flown to this isolated village. Our goals are to help provide for a more balanced diet and contribute to a more self-sustaining existence in supporting the village's resistance to "selling out" to Big Oil. This beautiful and pristene land and its people need to be protected. We want them to thrive and remain where they've been for generations.
A relationship with the people of Arctic Village began in 2003 in dramatic fashion. It has bonded us over the past seven years and we are welcomed as family each time we return. The ripple effect has carried over to many other villages as encouragement for their own gardening projects. Traveling once again to Arctic Village this summer, we will continue the gardening project as well as further our relationship with these special people. We are in a win-win situation as they receive the benefits of the gardening and we the knowledge and understanding of another culture we've come to greatly respect.
This committment has affected us in many ways, emotionally, socially, and even financially. But we realize as Glen Beck has, that we have a job to do and by 9/12 we will be able to report "what we have done." http://billandpenny.blogspot.com
