Wonderful COPENHAGEN - a city - that's living!
1) St. Nikolaj Church (Sct. Nikolaj Kirke), burn in The fire in 1795, only the tower still standing (from - 1500), rebuild 1909-1917, but never used as a church again. Kunsthallen Nikolaj (Nikolaj Copenhagen Contemporary Art Center) was actually a church, which was built in the Thirteenth Century. Placed on Nikolaj Plads (Nikolaj Square), a very attractive area right behind "Strøget" (pedestrian street). Since 1917, the building has only been used for exhibitions of different kinds, the reason being partly the beautiful, bare interior, which has proved perfect for showing art. The building has three galleries, including one in the tower. Besides 4 galleries within there's also two permanent installations. The exhibitions consist primarily of photographic art, and throughout the years, Kunsthallen Nikolaj has become known for its often provocative art. The subtle copper spire of Kunsthallen Nikolaj is a well-known silhouette in the Copenhagen skyline. When St. Nikolaj Church was built, the harbour of Copenhagen stretched as far as the foot of the church. With its direct view over the harbour, the church was named after the seamen's patron saint, Nikolaj. www.nikolajudstillingsbygning.dk/en/index_mainpage.asp?ma...

3) At Gammel Strand can be seen a statue of an old fishwife (fiskerkone - skovserkone) from Skovshoved. The statue was erected on November 12, 1940 and was sculpted by Christian Svejstrup Madsen. Gammel Strand was originally the site of Copenhagen fish market, and central to the commerce of the town. The sculpture represents one of the fishwives who once sold fish on this spot. The last 'fisherwife' Doris Marx stopped in march 2008, after 45 years - started New years eve 1963, to help out her mother in law. www.vejpark2.kk.dk/apps/monumenter/index.asp?lang=uk&...
