BJP and JDU prepare for all 40 Lok Sabha seats
Is the JD(U)-BJP alliance in Bihar set for a break-up soon? Even when the leaders from both the parties rule out any possibility of break-up in the alliance, both the parties have started preparations for contesting from all the 40 Lok Sabha seats separately. According to media reports, BJP state leader C P Thakur has said that the alliance between the two parties in the state is presently on but they (the BJP) are prepared for any eventuality”. "If CP Thakur has said the BJP is preparing for all 40 seats, then JD(U), too, is making its preparations to contest all seats. There is nothing wrong in it. Political parties make such preparations keeping in mind any eventuality," JD(U) spokesman Shivanand Tiwari was quoted as saying. "Yes, we are are preparing to contest all 40 Lok Sabha seats from Bihar in the next general elections after taking into account all possibilities, including the JD(U) deciding to sever ties with us at some stage," state unit BJP President C P Thakur said on Tuesday. He, however, emphasized that the JD(U) breaking away from its alliance with the BJP was just a possibility and he was sure that the ally in Bihar would not do so. Meanwhile, RJD leader Lalu Yadav said on Wednesday that corruption is spreading all across Bihar. "Against 'Atyachar, bhrashtachar, anachar' in the Nitish-ruled state, we will start a yatra to spread awareness." Following protests from the public and the Opposition against 'Adhikar yatra', Nitish Kumar and other JD (U) leaders have blamed the RJD for hatching a conspiracy against him.
Keeping options open in case of the last-minute break-up, both the BJP and the JD(U) in Bihar have started preparing to contest all 40 Lok Sabha seats separately.
"While discussing our future programme in Bihar, I had informed the national executive committee at its Surajkund meeting recently that taking into the account all possibilities, the state BJP is preparing to contest all 40 seats in next parliamentary elections," BJP's state president C P Thakur told TOI here on Tuesday.
"One should always be prepared for any eventuality," he said. However, he categorically denied any chance of break-up in the BJP-JD(U) alliance in Bihar at this Juncture. "Our alliance with the JD(U) is intact," he said.
When asked if the alliance is intact in Bihar why the BJP is preparing for all 40 seats, Thakur said, "The preparation is necessary also because the two parties may exchange a few seats just before the elections."
However, a senior BJP leader, who didn't want to be identified, admitted to TOI that the party was preparing for all the 40 seats keeping in mind all the possibilities, even of the JD(U) deciding to sever ties with the saffron party.
The JD(U) national spokesperson, Shivanand Tiwari, however, was not amazed at Thakur's statement.
"If Thakur has said that the BJP is preparing for all 40 seats, the JD(U), too, is making its preparations to contest all seats. There is nothing wrong in it. Political parties make such preparations keeping in mind any eventuality."
He said the JD(U)'s preparation was mainly because "the party does not want to be caught unaware in case our ally decides to sever ties with us."
Tiwari said, "In politics, it is always wise to be prepared for all seats. Nobody knows what is in store."
He, too, ruled out any possibility of break-up in the alliance. "At present, there is no tension, no irritant and no issue between us which may lead to break-up in the alliance," Tiwari said.
