Blagojevich: Illinois Senate Unanimously Votes for Impeachment
The roll call vote has been taken in Illinois and Rod Blagojevich has been convicted in his Senate trial. He was impeached by the Congress and put on trial in the Senate and has been convicted as charged. His conviction was unanimous with all 59 voting Senators finding him guilty of the impeachment charges in a vote that took less than five minutes to complete.
After removing Blagojevich from office the Senate held a second vote and decided to bar Blagojevich from ever serving in public office in Illinois again. He is no longer eligible to collect his pension and the other remuneration benefits of an ex-Governor.
The Senate decision does not extend to other states or to federal office and Blagojevich has expressed an interest in running for president in 2016. Whether or not he will be able to find any support from his party after being removed from office in disgrace remains to be seen.
Shortly after the removal was finalized by the Illinois Senate, Pat Quinn was sworn in as the 41st Governor of Illinois to replace Rod Blagojevich.
