As I write articles about poverty here in the Philippine I wish to thank Nowpublic member Milieunet for making me aware what  October 15th is all about and hopefully there are many more articles on poverty on nowpublic especially from members that live in the third world. But we must remember there is even poverty within the USA and other prosperous nation. My own renderings are below the quote..

To Know Poverty!

To know about poverty one really needs to visit the Third World and see the degradation that many fellow humans suffer. That there are many reasons why there is so much poverty in our world the biggest reason is over population and the next being the cause of nature. Droughts being some of the cruelest as this means the crops fail nothing will grow, live stock dies and people have no real means to provide food for the table. Of course floods, earth quakes etc adds to the Worlds dilemma.

Third world countries such as the Philippines have a different problem of a increasing population within it’s community of poor people where many find it hard to put just one meal of rice and dried fish on the table each day. Very large families with 14 or more children are not unknown, the average being about 6 or 7.

The biggest problem here in the Philippines as with many other Catholic third world country is the Catholic Church it self that forbids most birth control methods. Stating only natural methods can be used; these methods are not very fail safe thus the big families.

He average daily wage for those that can find a job is about 200 pesos (4 US$) a day and there is a Hugh unemployment problem. 6% of the people here are very wealthy and the rest are poor or in real poverty. The food prices went up drastically when oil prices went up and many Filipino’s had to tighten their belts.

The biggest problem in a country such as the Philippines is education, yes there is free education here but the side costs are to expensive for many families to send all their children to school. Many children stop at elementary level and have no chance of going to high school where the many projects and term signing up fee’s are just too expensive for the parents on low income or really impossible for those eking a living that are so very poor. Normally about 20% of the children graduate from high school with 10% going to college or university.

There are very few good jobs, so many of the graduates seek work over seas as a B.Sc does not really wish to work in a small shop or store as a salesman or women. The aim of most families is to get at least one child to high school. As the children are expected to support the parents when old this leads to many problems in later life as some times expectation are not fulfilled. I have seen many poor old people begging on the streets or wandering around house to house asking for food or money.

There are of course many worst places concerning poverty in Asia such as India and we must not forget South America and Central America. However the poverty I have seen here in the Philippines is alarming and the government even though is corrupt seems to be making a slight headway including introduction of birth control of which is being used by the sensible even though it’s against their religion. It is sensible to cut the amount of mouths you have to feed to stop you going down the slope of a poverty that you can not get one self out of or worst still leave an inheritance of poverty to ones children.

The answer to poverty here in the >Philippines is education and investing in people and only the government is in a real position to do that by attracting the elite to help start new businesses and ridding corruption. Donations and help such as scholarships from outside the country do help but it’s never enough. Tourism is one of the best answer adventure holidays, diving and not package tours to the most expensive hotels as much of the money spent there does not stay in the country. More people need to retire here and be allowed to run small businesses and buy small pockets of land in their own name.

Each year I bring in approximately one million peso’s from UK and spend it here in the local shops, businesses and restaurant’s etc. It helps boost the local economy and there are many ex-pats here who like me have retired the number is swelling. With the other things I do here, I thing whilst I am enjoying my retirement I am helping in my own little way and I have achieved my life dream of living on a tropical Island, I did not realize what poverty I would see and know my eyes are wide open.

I plead to those that can afford it to go on adventure holidays in the third world your learn about poverty and also enjoy the sun and the great sights and experiences, just one holiday of a life time and know you are helping to eradicate poverty in your own little way. But don’t stay in the hotel or beach walk around talk to people and spend money in the small rickety shops and market places.

One of the saddest thing about poverty it attracts the birds of prey the human traffickers, unfortunately here in the Philippines human trafficking is very apparent not just to overseas but here in the Philippines it self. Where girls are sort for prostitution and the bikini bars. Many Girls are lured to other Asian countries by false recruitment companies and in fact even end up in far away places to be forced to become prostitutes. This is becoming a very big problem though the government closes many recruitment companies down and the offenders go to jail, new establishments open. Similarly the bikini bars and prostitution rackets here get close down etc, and others sex business take their place. I expect that’s the same in many other third world countries.

Some of the things I have stated in the past on nowpublic....

Poverty is talked about in the news media, forums and social communities, its causes are many fold, drought, war, over population, a lack of education, corruption and unemployment being the main factors. Most countries that suffer poverty are governed by an elite, rich class. In communist states original the rich elite gave the excuse for communist take over with poverty being the fires of a required change of leadership based on socialism and community reform.

I have seen many arguments that over and increasing population does not cause poverty to expand. The Catholic Church backup this theory, the fact is that much of the third world relates to the wishes of the Vatican. World poverty is not just a religious related problem it’s mainly related to the seemingly non caring attitude of the rich elite. Keep the status quo could possibly be their motto. In the Philippines.

Its seems logic that a poverty stricken family with 8 or 9 children finds it harder to live on low income, than a family with 2 or 3 children. Also the cost of sending 8 or 9 children to school to receive an education is above the means of a very low wage and income. This normally means that only 1 or 2 children if any can achieve high school graduation, the rest of the brood may achieve elementary school graduation.

and

I live amongst the poverty of a third world nation, I see the suffering and hunger where as here in the Philippines, the very poor can place food on their tables, but it’s a hard slog for parents with 7 or 8 children to provide one good meal a day, with all the nutrients needed to keep the family healthy. Things are just as bad or worst through out the third world.

United Nations report on global poverty

25,000 lives are lost every day from hunger and poverty; even a bad case of diarrhoea can lead to death because of weakness caused by hunger. (United Nations)

More than 800 million people know what it feels like to go to bed hungry; most of them women and children. (United Nations)

Malnutrition causes more than half of all child deaths. (United Nations)

Poor families spend over 70% of their income on food. (An average American family spends just over 10%). (United Nations)

More than 100 million children are stunted physically and mentally from malnutrition, wrecking their chances for a good education and productive future. (United Nations)

But the problem here in the Philippines is culture related, the culture being a Roman Catholic one. The fact that the Catholic Church has a ridged pro life program that is anti birth control, please read this interesting article: The history of birth control.  This Catholic indoctrination does not help population control within a poverty ridden society, it’s a logic conclusion that population growth causes expansion of poverty, where there is high unemployment.

Here in the Philippine education is free at elementary and high school level, however there is the problem of fees at the beginning of each term these are normally about US$10 and one needs to buy books and writing materials. The biggest problem is the cost of school projects of which could be as much as US$50 per term. Many families find it very hard to afford to send all their children to school to achieve each child’s complete education. Classes are crowded and there are not enough teachers. This education problem is the cause of many young people never being given the chance to be qualified to be employed in a decent career. This of course adds to the poverty problem.

finally..

Over the many years that I have resided in the third world, my thoughts have been related to how I can help eradicate the poverty that surrounds me. My answer to that problem is that by retiring here my meager pensions actually help as a Peso Millionaire most of my money enters the local economy. I help fund parents to send children to school and send a talented Filipino to university to train to be a teacher (a much needed talent). I am just one of the ex-pats that help most do not realize they do. But I realized the biggest help that any foreigner can achieve is to make countries in the third world a holiday destination.

Want to help eradicate poverty and have a nice time doing just that? Well the answer is to go on an adventure holiday where the airfare is the only real big expense. You arrange the accommodation by surfing the web. This means looking for low priced accommodation and not staying at the Ritz and one can arrange a holiday of a life time or at least one to educate you on the problems of poverty. Your money will spread far here everything is cheaper here.

Your welcome also. I live here and constantly remind people what a nice place it is to live in and about the hell here also unfortunatly paradise has its hell. But the sheer beauty of the water falls, the mountains and the beautiful beaches that are of the normal tourist map, plus the reefs and beautiful fish.

My answer to poverty is to visit it spend money where its needed and enjoy spending and the wonderful smiles one receives is great a great pay back. Living here is another matter it takes a long time to get use to the noise, the dodgem trafic etc, but one can find a quiet beautiful haven as I have. My garden is full of beautiful tropical birds and butterflies and the frogs and crickets take over in the evening. But when I go out of the gate povery shows it's ugly head its never far away.

The pictures I took are mostly of the new market place in Sibulan Negros Oriental its a picture to the dirty old market and a very great improvement that the Mayor here should be highly praised for. Negros has had more money released for the improvement as its become a tourist attraction especially Dumaguete City of which will soon be able to claim a Large Robertson Mall which will help local employment.

Food prices have rose dramatically over the past year especially rice of which is the staple Filippino diet, this was due to the rise in oil prices, thankfully the prices are gradually decreasing but not as quick as they should now that oils down below 80 US$ per barrel. The effect of this of course has made many poor families tighten their belts. But for some unknown reason they joke smile and laugh.
