Blowback From Bear-Baiting

Even Patrick J. Buchanan, the quintessential American conservative and Republican has had it with the belligerent hypocritical hubris being spewed by Condoleeza Rice and George Bush during the current crisis in Georgia and South Ossetia, and he can see clearly the negative impact their continued arrogance will have on the USA and the world.  Though I disagree often with Mr.Buchanan he does not mince words and calls 'em like he sees 'em!

Mikheil Saakashvili's decision to use the opening of the Olympic Games to cover Georgia's invasion of its breakaway province of South Ossetia must rank in stupidity with Gamal Abdel-Nasser's decision to close the Straits of Tiran to Israeli ships.

Nasser's blunder cost him the Sinai in the Six-Day War. Saakashvili's blunder probably means permanent loss of South Ossetia and Abkhazia.

After shelling and attacking what he claims is his own country, killing scores of his own Ossetian citizens and sending tens of thousands fleeing into Russia, Saakashvili's army was whipped back into Georgia in 48 hours.

Vladimir Putin took the opportunity to kick the Georgian army out of Abkhazia, as well, to bomb Tbilisi and to seize Gori, birthplace of Stalin.

Reveling in his status as an intimate of George Bush, Dick Cheney and John McCain, and America's lone democratic ally in the Caucasus, Saakashvili thought he could get away with a lightning coup and present the world with a fait accompli.

Mikheil did not reckon on the rage or resolve of the Bear.

American charges of Russian aggression ring hollow. Georgia started this fight -- Russia finished it. People who start wars don't get to decide how and when they end.

Russia's response was "disproportionate" and "brutal," wailed Bush.

True. But did we not authorize Israel to bomb Lebanon for 35 days in response to a border skirmish where several Israel soldiers were killed and two captured? Was that not many times more "disproportionate"?

Russia has invaded a sovereign country, railed Bush. But did not the United States bomb Serbia for 78 days and invade to force it to surrender a province, Kosovo, to which Serbia had a far greater historic claim than Georgia had to Abkhazia or South Ossetia, both of which prefer Moscow to Tbilisi?

Is not Western hypocrisy astonishing?

sure. let's forget that certain serbians massacred thousands on civilians. and let's forget that russia has some history of occuping terrotiries.....

ALWAYS beware the russian oppression. The people of eastern Europe has learnt that. I dont trust the russians (government, invading soldiers) a tiny little bit.

finally for Israel. ask yourself the question, would you start a war if the enemy has captured 1000 of your soldiers and wouldnt let go? Now ask yourself, would you start for one?

moonwolf, I like this story. It's good stuff.

Buchanan is an interesting character. I agree with what he said, but the most obvious answer he didn't seem to spit out would be how Bush and his teams arrogance in orchestrating 911 by doing a Saakashvili' in "killing his own people" in order to escalate and wage a lying war against Iraq and Afghanistan. Bush invaded Afghanistan & Iraq killing thousands of innocent people, and no one brings that to justice? Impeachment and Courts are shut down. Might as well say Marshall Law has been in existence now since 2003 without the American people really knowing it. America isn't about freedom anymore..its about militarism, and acquiescence to the State

Pat Buchanan is a total isolationist so, keeping that in mind, I'm not too surprised at what he has to say about this. But I will still maintain that I do not (and I know you're going to disagree with me here, my friend - I really do mean that) and will never trust Russia as long as Putin is in power. I think Russia still has designs on becoming again what it once was - "the other major power in the world."

Good piece and a good find moon.

All I can say is Putin is better than Bush, any day of the year. America in fact is more dangerous and out of control than pre-Russia. It's not Russia nor its Pre Soviet Union makeup who invaded Iraq, and killed thousands of innocent people. Russia should be the worlds Guardian because look at the size of it? It's massive, and it covers the top of the world...Long live Russia, and its good people.
