A liberal friend asked me why I am so afraid of an Obama presidency. My answer was to point out the incredible damage our country has suffered and is still suffering from due to the blunders of previous liberal presidents. These blunders sometimes take years to become apparent and decades or generations to overcome. I don’t know if we will ever get over the damage caused by Kennedy and Johnson’s Vietnam adventure. President Carter’s naive blunder and foolishness concerning Iran substituted a dictator who liked us with ones who hate us, and unleashed the fury of Muslim terrorism on an America they now saw as weak and cowardly.

The housing and mortgage crisis may have been facilitated by the greed of home speculators, lenders and Wall Street financial institutions, but the framework for this disaster was put in place by Presidents Carter and, especially, Clinton who pushed for and appointed cronies to Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac to force lenders to give loans to deadbeats.

Ignorant morons may still be out there protesting the Iraq War, and President Bush might have been more popular after 9/11 if he had wrung his hands and did nothing else but shed crocodile tears very publicly as did President Clinton after other terrorist attacks, but Bush’s policies showed the Arab world that America can and will respond with devastating force, and, together with his surveillance programs, President Bush has stopped Muslim terrorism on American targets in its tracks.

Only our grandchildren will know if the establishment of a democratic society in the middle of a 7th century group of cultures will take hold and flourish. One sure thing: if Obama does what he says he will do, and if he responds to foreign crises as did Carter and Clinton, our grandchildren will not live in the freedom and prosperity we have, if they are alive at all.

Republicans have continually eroded all freedoms and murdered liberal politicians.  Their only agenda is hate and fear, never hope.  Why can't you see that moron?

Your comment and name-calling only reveals your own state of mind.  My recollection is that it was a communist, Oswald, who murdered John Kennedy, and a Palestinian nut-job, Sirhan, who murdered Robert Kennedy.  What the devil are you even talking about?

joellerose:

You make some very true and important points. However, Kennedy wanted to get out of Nam and was bound already by Eisenhowards commitments. Most who lived through this era will always feel there was more than just an Oswald. We should diffenitly learn from history and realise we need a little of both to continue to make this country great. Too far left or right is extreme. I pray with you that Obama will be able to put a knowledgeable team together and that we as the people of the USA watch our Congress and vote out extremes on either side. I did not vote for Obama, but now he's the president.

True Republican

I would like to add my point to this debate. But before I do let me say i am odd type of conservative- the teenage conservative. That is right I am 18 ( a senior in high school) and have been conservative seen I was young. I do have some liberal views and I am not a racist. I am a capitalist conservative who believes the market should regulate itself. I have been called, and I am quite used to it- as all us Republicans are, an intellectually elitists rich yuppie kid. My rebuttal is simple- I was not born wealthy- I would not call myself rich though I found out I have skewed idea of the term. I said in Econ class that I figured at least 35% of Americans make over a 100K a year. I still do not believe that only 6% do. My teacher, an arch-liberal replied that, though I was her favorite student, I was a hopeless yuppie. But my faith in the market is rooted in experience. At the age of 13 I started a rare book dealership that is doing quite well- even in this econ mess- and I have owned many a rare Hemingway and Steinbeck first printing. I have also held many a rare stamp in my hands- before I sold it. I ahve also written a book and articles.

My point is that the business minded and intellectually oriented tend to be conservative for good reason. My family is filled with doctors and lawyers- all conservative.

The liberal philosophy of the welfare state is a dangerous one in my opinion. FDR was a demigod in my opinion. The New Deal, so hailed by Democrats, did not get us out of the Depression- World War II did. I will be the first to admit that Roosevelt did a fine job during the war but that was the only good thing he did.

We seem to have forgotten that to get places in life we have to work. Nothing can be handed to us- welfare included. The Modern Liberal talks about handing out medical aid and welfare as if they are our birthrights as Americans. Do not even get me started on affirmative action. The constitution says nothing about guaranteeing healthcare and an income to all. And when did health care become a basic right- after thousands of years did some democrat coxcomb have an epiphany from God.

I have had many argument over the taxing of the rich. Why should a wealthy person have to pay more than a normal one? Are we punishing him for his success? If you are rich it is likely you have worked hard to get it. Unless of course you are a football/baseball player, whose IQs are so low it is an amazing feat of nature that they can move. I ahve always said that in the real world a sportsman of the kind we see in High School, NFL, NBA, MVP leagues would probably be making mimuim wage.

The life of a doctor or lawyer- who everyone seems to deride as rich yuppies- is not easy. Most of the adults I know are lawyers and doctors. The life of a doctor is one of poverty until they are about say 30. They are saddled with Med school debt and amke nothing in a residency. That these self sacrificing servants should be punished is a true crime. As a future lawyer I can say it is easier but only a little bit so for us.

It is about time that democrats take a look at reality and realuize they are acting adolsecents. That is the best comparsion I have ever heard and it comes from a psychiatrist. I refer you to The Liberal Mind: The Psychological Causes of Political Madness. You must work hard. All you who believe you can get places by being lazy- and that is what all these crap is- look at reality.
