Bob Rae says he was asked to sign a document while in Sri Lanka
UPDATE 1:
OTTAWA -- The federal government has formally registered its "dismay and displeasure" with the Sri Lankan government over the deportation of Liberal foreign affairs critic, Bob Rae.
During the dispute, Mr. Rae called a Sri Lankan government spokesman a liar for branding him a supporter of the defeated Tamil Tiger rebels.
The diplomatic incident comes shortly after Sri Lankan protesters caused disruptions in Ottawa and Toronto that have attempted to draw attention to the violence in their homeland, but have only angered many Canadians.
"It is absurd to suggest that Mr. Rae represents a threat to Sri Lankan national security, or is a supporter of LTTE [Liberation Tigers of Tamil Elam]," said Foreign Affairs spokeswoman Emma Welford.

During the few hours he stayed at the Bandaranaike International Airport, Bob Rae said he was asked to sign a document admitting that he had made statements that were ill-informed against the government.
The Toronto Centre Liberal MP and former Ontario premier refused to sign it.
"We finally got a message saying that if I admitted that I had made statements that were ill-informed or something like that – and they gave me a thing I could sign – that they might reconsider the decision," Rae, who has travelled 10 times to the country in the past decade, said by telephone from London.
No one would tell him what specific statements had offended the government, so he refused to sign the document, securing his seat on the afternoon flight to London.
"I said that that's completely Orwellian."
Mr. Rae's visa to Sri Lanka was confirmed by the Sri Lanka's deputy high commissioner in Ottawa but a defence ministry official said the army has intelligence reports indicating Rae supported the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam.
Mr. Rae said the Sri Lankan high commissioner to Canada phoned him to apologize for his expulsion.
Sri Lanka's deputy high commissioner in Ottawa, C.A.H.M. Wijeratne, confirmed that Rae's visa received a "green light" from officials in Colombo. But the country's Daily Mirror newspaper quoted a defence ministry official saying that the army has intelligence reports indicating Rae supported the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam.
In an interview with The Canadian Press, the Sri Lankan high commissioner to Canada, Daya Perera, said it "might have been advisable" to allow Rae into the country to see for himself the aftermath of Sri Lanka's bloody civil war.
"The country has nothing to hide," Perera said.
Rae said Perera phoned him to apologize for his expulsion.
This is the second time Canada has officially complained to Sri Lanka. The first time was when a group of protestors in Sri Lanka vandalized the Canadian Embassy in Sri Lanka.
This marks the second time in recent weeks Canada has officially complained to Sri Lanka. In late May, the federal government reacted angrily after hundreds of protesting Sri Lankans vandalized the Canadian High Commission in Colombo, pelting it with stones, and spray-painting it with graffiti.

It is glad too he did not visit those IDPs as, Imagine a liar goes to IDP camp and then what will be the next. All these for save his seat in the parliment. Before he thinks about Sri Lankan issues there are so many issues to find in Canada. I think he should find what happend to the Canadian journalist went missing in Somalia and it is almost 10 months now. Why that Canadian is not so important under terrorist or kidnappers and what so special in the Tamils live in IDPs. Why he early not find out about them when they are in LTTE's Human sheild. This is called having garbage in there own land and going to clean some ones actually it is not cleaning, it is complaining. Sad to see some people still getting trips from these unbased stories,. Sri Lanka and its people are still not dums as you all think.
Suranee please kindly tell me when & where this was happened and how come it was not mentioned any news in Sri Lanka. If you can I am glad. Thanks.

Chanaka,
Why don't you ask the Sri lankan newspapers why they didn't report the story. As for my personal opinion on why they did not, it's because they probably knew they will face the same fate that Lasantha and so many other journalists who were killed faced when they reported the truth.
If you have a problem with the authenticity of this story, then you can always write to the newspaper agency that reported this story and tell them about it.

Killing of the journalist are not the issue for not writing story like this. there are more stories published even protest organisers are now well known to be in the LTTE's Pay role journalists. They are living fine. Other thing is killings are not proven by who and it can be done any one to put blame to the GOSL. Because all these LTTE pay role journalist were among the first to come out and hold banners after few hours Lasanthas dead. So it should be look in how the media works. So there is no problems with the media freedom in Sri Lanka. Few wants to show that there it is.
Well Thanks for the advice.
