Bolivia: UNASUR to hold emergency Summit at Chile by rahul

Caracas, Venezuela, 13 September 2008. The Union of South American Nations (UNASUR) will hold an emergency Summit at Chile on Monday to discuss the ongoing crisis in Bolivia which threatens its democratic institutions.  President Michelle Bachelet called for the Summit as Chile holds the Pro Tempore Chair of UNASUR.

During a TV interview, Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez explained the UNASUR summit would attempt to counteract the ongoing coup in Bolivia. Chavez informed that foreign paramilitaries were entering Bolivia by Brazil to crate havoc in the separatist provinces.  This event is similar to the one that took place during the attempted coup against Chavez in 2002. Two years later, 120 Colombian paramilitaries were found in a farm near Caracas dressed in local military uniforms. Robert Alonso, brother of Cuban American (ex Venezuelan) Actress Maria Conchita Alonso owns the farm where the paramilitaries were living and training.

UNASUR is a supranational and intergovernmental union integrating two existing customs unions -Mercosur and the Andean Community-  to further regional integration, security, common defence and solve regional problems locally. UNASUR was envisioned in the Cuzco Declaration signed in 2004.
