MSNBC News is reporting that a car bomb killed 17 people and injured more than a dozen others, in the Syrian capital of Damascus.

The TV said a car packed with 440 pounds of explosives blew up on Mahlak Street, located in a southern neighborhood of the capital near the junction to the city's international airport. Anti-terror units were investigating, it said.

The article from MSNBC reports that the bombing occured at the intersection of Saydah Seinan, which is a holy shrine for Shiites that is often visited by Iranian and Iraqi tourists and pilgrims. Al-Jazeera TV has reported that the car bomb exploded near a Syrian intelligence post in an area that is known as Sidi Kadad. The Sidi Kadad area is a very heavily populated area of Damascus.

The car bomb, which Syrian public television said contained about 200kg of explosives, detonated in a southern suburb of the capital at about 8am [0500 GMT] on Saturday.

As of the posting of this article, no group or individual has claimed responsibility for the bombing attack. The officials added that Syrian security forces have closed off the area, and are currently trying to figure out the circumstances of the blast. Witnesses said that some building about 100 meters away had shattered windows and the remains of a destroyed car were thrown onto the highway.

"We cannot accuse any party. There are ongoing investigations that will lead us to those who carried it out," Abdul-Majid told state television.

The recent car bombing was the first in Damascus since February, when a car bomb killed the senioe militry commander of Hezbollah, Imad Moghaniyah.

Is it possible they missed their target, and that's why no group has claimed responsibility?

Rene, that is an interesting thought. It does seem like a rather nonspecific place to detonate a car bomb.
