India's capital New Delhi is in panic after a bag containing some objectionable items were found abandoned in an auto rickshaw in the heart of city. More details are expected.

Panic spread in the Connaught Place in the heart of the national capital after a suspicious object was found left in an auto-rickshaw, the police said.

Two foreign nationals, said to be Nigerians, had left a bag in the auto-rickshaw at 4.30 p.m., police officials said. The auto-rickshaw driver opened the bag and found a portable safe, which he reported to the police, they said.

The Connaught Place police station sent a bomb disposal squad and a special team of the National Security Guard (NSG) also reached the spot, and experts were at work to defuse explosives, if any, the officials said.

A report from the Times of India said two electronic metal safes were found inside the bag:

The safes could not be opened for a long time as officers present at the spot thought it unsafe to do so till the bomb squad arrived.

The auto was taken to a vacant plot on Baba Kharak Singh Marg opposite to the state emporia. The entire area was cordoned off using metal barriers as a precautionary measure. The bomb squad and the commando team were inspecting the bag till late into the night. According to some reports, a suitcase was also found in the auto.

A senior police officer said: ``The auto was intercepted as a part of routine procedure but the moment the men saw the policemen they jumped out from the other side and just melted in the crowd leaving us with a very scared auto driver and a very heavy bag which caused bomb rumours to fly thick and fast. But as of now we are not ruling out anything. It can even be a case of drugs smuggling and the men may have been involved in the black dollar scam.”

Wow. Very important additional details around the people who got lost in the crowd. Sounds like the intent was not honorable in any case. ♠
