In a tragic incident of roadside bomb blast, 21 people who were going to attend the marriage party, died. Reports says that several are injured and death toll may rise.Whether they were the target or accidently fell victim of road side bomb is not yet clear.

A roadside bomb in Afghanistan has killed at least 21 people as they were travelling to a wedding in the south of the country, officials say.

Helmand provincial police chief Assadullah Sherzad said that women and children were among those killed in Garmsir district.

In a separate incident, five Aghan police were killed by a roadside bomb in the Nadali district of Helmand.

Roadside bombs are frequently used to attack foreign and Afghan forces.

Thousands of Nato troops are conducting offensives in Helmand.

The incident happened on Wednesday, although information was not released until Thursday.

Afghan Gen Shir Mohammad Zazai said those killed had been travelling on a tractor and a trailer, and he blamed the incident on the Taliban.

"It is the work of the enemy of the nation, it is the work of the enemy of peace and the work of the Taliban," he said.

The Afghan defence ministry confirmed the incident and the death toll. Officials say at least five other people were injured.

Afghan troops have been sent to the area to help with rescue efforts, officials said.

At least 20 civilians headed to a wedding in southern Afghanistan died on Thursday when their vehicle was struck by a roadside bomb, officials said.

Women and children were among the casualties, said Helmand provincial police chief Assadullah Sherzad. At least five were also wounded in the bombing, which occurred in the Garmser district.

Sherzad said roadside bombs are often used by insurgents in the region to attack foreign and Afghan forces.

"It's the work of the enemy of the nation, it's the work of the enemy of peace and the work of the Taliban," Gen. Sher Mohammad Zazai, commander of an Afghan military unit in the region, told Reuters.

The Afghani Ministry of Defence has confirmed the bomb and said at least 20 people died.

A UN report released last week indicates civilian deaths in Afghanistan have risen by 24 per cent during the first half of 2009 when compared to the same period last year.

The report indicated that at least 595 civilians were killed by Taliban — mostly by suicide attack and roadside bombs — in the first six months of 2009. The report also warned that those casualties will likely rise leading into the country's presidential elections.
