Boris Johnson, London's Justin Bieber

If schoolchildren could vote, Boris Johnson would have the election for London Mayor sewn up. No matter that he’s 47 and looks like the Dulux dog in a suit. As he barrels along the pavement on the campaign trail, teenagers swarm to him, as if were a middle-aged Justin Bieber. TV news crews are forced to stand aside as packs of youths clamour to have their picture taken with him. “TEAM BORIS!” they cry. Their idol beams bemusedly.

There are few politicians in Britain today who can attract crowds like Mr Johnson does. Possibly George Osborne could, but the crowd would probably be wielding pitchforks.
